Original article: Scoring Gibbs vs. Cheney

But wait, there's more...

... as reported in War Room yesterday:

"....Then CBS News' Chip Reid, showing perhaps a little deficit in his sense of humor, chimed in, asking, "That was a really hard-hitting, kind of sarcastic, response you had. This is a former vice president of the United States. Is that the attitude? Is that the sanctioned tone for the former vice president of the United States from this White House?" ....

"Sometimes I ask forgiveness, rather than for permission, Chip," Gibbs said, "but no, I hope my sarcasm didn't mask the seriousness of the answer... that for seven-plus years the very perpetrators that the vice president says he's concerned about weren't brought to justice."

To me, this is what makes Gibbs so great at this job: If Cheney wants to stoke up fear about Obama's enemy combatant policy changes, it's fair for Obama's press secretary to pointedly call out Cheney on the failure of HIS policies. And Gibbs does it so beautifully - quietly and articulately, unlike the blathering idiocy of Dana Perino and her squirrelly predecessors.

Also, I would point out that it looks like Chuck Todd didn't have that original thought. Chip Reid at least was willing to ask his stupid question directly to Gibbs.

It was such a throwaway

I bet most people didn't really hear it. He kinda mumbled it while he and Leno were taking over each other. The entire interview was so full of substance, it's a shame this is what you chose to focus on. What impressed me about this interview was how Obama used the opportunity to reach a large audience to talk seriously about how he wants to deal with this crisis, but also to keep showing us his human side. This is the real story to be told about this interview.

No courage

As a fan of Barack Obama, I am disappointed by his lack of courage in not requiring bonus limits in the bailouts he authorized. By not being willing to confront AIG and the banks directly, and either put limits in the bailout package or force AIG to renegotiate the bonuses (no contract is ironclad, just ask the UAW or a good MLB pitcher), he gave Congress an easy way to answer angry Americans demanding justice. Thus, we now have a potential 90% tax that will reach all the way down to little old me - a lawyer buried in the low to middle ranks of a big bank that was forced to take TARP money.

Mind you, I don't make $250,000, but the bonus excise tax is imposed on those with adjusted gross income of $250K, thus reaching married couples who together make that amount. I recieved a modest bonus this year (and why not, MY bank was successful!) that will sit in the bank making 0.001% interest until I know whether I have to hand 90% of it over to the government. As I wrote to my Senators asking them to end the madness, that money could be paying remodelers, car salesmen, or otherwise goosing the economy.

I am not asking for sympathy. I recognize that most Americans are not affected by this potential tax. But both the administration and Congress should do the hard work of differentiating between traders and investment bankers who made millions of real dollars by creating billions in fake profits, from the hardworking accountants, lawyers, middle managers and their spouses being swept up in this populist net. They must also do the hard work of differentiating between good banks like mine, which was forced to take TARP money it didn’t need, from the bad actors who have killed our economy.

For God's sake...

... Notre Dame snagged THE PRESIDENT! How many people get to say that the President - and a popular history-making one at that - spoke at their graduation? I would love to see a little more backlash on the part of the Domers against those right wing idiots - if 97% of senior support the selection, why aren't they LOUDLY standing up to these supposed Christians?

I know! I know!

"if Republicans can finally figure out how to appeal to black voters, the political landscape would suddenly be very different."

Hey, Repugs, the answer is "Stop being the party of racism, bigotry and hate". Now get out there and win over the black vote!

Excuse me????

"I've now formally asked the CIA to take steps to declassify those memos so we can lay them out there and the American people have a chance to see what we obtained."

Since when does a former vice president get to ask the CIA to declassify anything? I'm sure there's no law against him calling up his old torturer buddies and say "Hey, why don't you see what you can do about declassifying the stuff that proves we were right?". But isn't it up to the current administration to "formally" determine what gets declassified and what doesn't?

I have not seen a word written or spoken in the media about how that was a really stupid thing to say, and another instance of the inappropriate attempts on the part of Cheney to undermine the current president.

Indictment vs. Conviction

Your last sentence indicates you may have missed Frank's point: It's a violation of fundamental principles of due process to deny a right or privilege to an entity or person that has only been indicted, not yet convicted, of a crime. The very existence of the amendment and the sneaky way it was put forward is disgusting in itself, but Bachmann's use of indictment rather than conviction is telling and oh so typical of a republican - ACORN is never innocent until proven guilty, and count on a thuglican to always overplay her hand. She could have sat back and snickered quietly for putting one over on Frank, but no, she had to run out and tell the world.

Her MSNBC bit was for mostly for comic effect

You really should have watched her whole segment on Olbermann. It was a witty, funny bit. You know Garafalo is a comedian, right?
