Love the two posts before me
[Read the article: "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yah, Stephanie's review only makes me want to see the movie that much more. 'English restraint' is a good phrase for a movie about an English queen. And to expect Hollywood to be historically accurate over the much-convoluted politics of the English Renassiance AND still have an entertaining movie is unrealistic.
The trailer looks awesome and I loved the first Elizabeth so I am most definitely going to be there this weekend.

"Enthusiastic commentators?"
[Read the article: Can feminism help your love life?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I can guess which posters you are referring. Hey, they keep these threads going!
But thanks for the study--it only confirms what most of us fems know already. That we're pretty happy and have good men in our lives who treat us with respect.

You know...
[Read the article: Home-decorating dreams?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I grew up with an Easy Bake oven and I STILL can't cook. AND, I work for a living.
Oh yah--and I had Home Economics classes too.
Didn't stop me from going to college and getting a career.
I think our little girls are going to more influenced by what mommy is doing and less on the various toys our culture tries to push.

Whatever works
[Read the article: "Panties for Peace"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If it will help, letting go of some panties is a small sacrafice.
Anything that works.

I concur with most of this thread.....
[Read the article: How Oprah ruined the marathon]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I, too, was a bit offended by this article. Mr. McClelland is assuming that those of us who are less-than-elite runners are ruining the game.
So WHAT if the majority of marathoners are not finishing sub 4 hours?? And that slows the elite runners down???? I don't think so! I ran the LA Mararthon twice and the elite runners run in their own crowd, with their own starting time, separate from the rest of us.
I've been running for 30 years and was considered a champion in my day (back in the 70s). I remember Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter. And Joanie Benoit.
Trust me, if I could run a fast marathon today, I would. Hell, I'd love to run another one but my body won't let me--I got injured after my second one. So, I work out in the gym with weights and cardio. I didn't consider myself a 'drag' on the elite runners because I finished both marathons around 4:30. And I trained my ass off.
American marathoners have lost their edge, not due to the 'Oprah' runners of the world, but due to the lack of corporate sponsorship that other sports get. We don't support runners like we do other sports. There was a great story on NPR about this the other day.
AND, Mr. McClelland, the Chicago Marathon shut down early due to lack of water a couple hours into the race, not because the slower runners bogged the race down. Good God--where did you get such an attitude?!
I am happy to see less-than-stellar runners get into the game....anything to stop the growth of obesity and all of the adjacent diseases the come along with it.
In the meantime, if America wants better marathoners, then nuture them--give them sponsorship, collegiate and post-collegiate. That is the only way we can compete with the Kenyans, Eastern Europeans, etc.
And get off of your high horse, Mr. McClelland.

[Read the article: How Oprah ruined the marathon]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So you consider marathon running a 'useless and self-indulgent' activity?
Have you ever run a marathon?? I find that most people who sit in judgment towards those of us who are physically active to be not so active themselves. But I could be wrong in your case...
To answer your question as why we runners run marathons: the runner's high, the challenge, the ability to do something as physically taxing as a marathon, to stay fit, to finish something we started, to better ourselves.
Self indulgent? If you consider bettering yourself to be self indulgent. Useless? Only if taken to the extreme and one's health is ruined, which does happen to those that get addicted to running extreme distances.
Me, I run because I like the effect--being in shape and feeling active and far younger than my 46 years. I also like that I can finish something I started and train, for months at a time, towards a goal. As I said in earlier post, I'd still be doing marathons if my body would let me--but my injury after my 2nd marathon knocked me down to doing workouts in the gym (mainly weights and cardio now).
You call an investment in time and energy towards my physical, mental and emotional well-being a waste of time. I call it being a good example.
And the best sermon is a good example.

Where is the talk of exercise among these professionals?
[Read the article: The diet that's too good to be true]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It never ceases to amaze me that so many people treat diabetes strictly with diet/insulin.
Exercise has proven to help regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics as well as 'normal' folk.
You wanna know how to keep weight off and eat a lot?? Lift weights. I lift several times a week and I can eat more (granted, I don't eat many high glycemic carbs) than I did when I ran marathons. I ate a pound of Ahi Tuna last night. A POUND! And I'm 5'10 and 150 pounds, much of it muscle.
My advice to the diabulimics is to eat very well, lift weights and do some form of cardio on a regular basis.
Their body will thank them and they won't put on a ton of weight when they follow their insulin.

Wha that?
[Read the article: My boss wants me to apologize to his wife]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]He wants YOU to apologize to his wife for something he has done??? Yah, you had a part but, like Cary said, your best amends to your former boss and his wife is to LEAVE his life. No contact. Nada.
No, this guy is manipulating you to do his dirtywork. So you made a big mistake. Don't make another one and contact his wife.
Act better and let your actions be your amends.
Good call, Cary.
