I guess you know movies pretty well

but you demonstrate you know J/S about the environmental movement.

"Watson is a divisive figure, seen as an ineffective bombast even by many people within the environmental movement."

Many, huh? How many did you talk to? What, did you make one call to Greenpeace headquarters to get the straight dope on him?

In fact, MANY people actually in the movement see SSS as one of the few groups with integrity out there.

"As to the bigger picture, you're free to debate the morality of Sea Shepherd's tactics, call them terrorists, etc."

Or call them heroes with real guts, unlike the writer of this snarky screed.

"They're fearless, they believe in what they're doing, they have indeed saved some whales, and it looks like they're having a blast."

Indeed, that's what it's all about, a few whales.

I guess on some level you're feeling very concerned that some day you may have to get through life without hair gel.

@ mikefina

Try spending a little time with real environmentalists rather than cartoonish stereotypes, then come back and post again. Twit.

So, since

Porn makes men rapists

and

Porn makes men gay

then

Porn makes men gay rapists!

You'd think the homophobes would be happy about that. They're so confusing!

Re agore, JaaZee, Glock 45

Whether these self- or Fox-deluded people care to acknowledge it or not, most Americans know well that the Republican policies initiated during the Reagan Devolution created "growth" based on lies, lies, and more lies--hyper-leveraged debt, the biggest transfer of wealth to the top 1-5% of Americans (economically, not morally, culturally, or for the most part by any other standard), the hollowing out of the middle-class, etc etc etc. And now these political and social dead-enders are trying their best to rewrite history.

Let them wilt on their thorny vines, why waste time on them.

The reality is, an economic model based on growth that depends on the exploitation of finite natural resources is (drum roll) illusory, cancerous, doomed to fail and dooming us all.

Ten years go we were worried about spotted owls, now polar bears, tigers, elephants, gorillas, giraffes, chimpanzes, lions, cheetahs, and many others (to name only the "charismatic megafauna we can get a little stirred up about) slide not-so-slowly towards extinction, while these small-souled people concern themselves with the effects any reigning in of our death-tropic economy will have on their ability to pull a speedboat with their Hummers. How pathetic, or pathological.

Since the vast majority of those in power, and most citizens as well, don't seem to care enough to try reduce the deleterious--perhaps fatally so--effects of this disastrous model on our ecosystems, it's either fortunate or inevitable that things slow down or come crashing down, the only choice being whether it's before or after we render our planet a pale reflection of it's pre-industrial self.

The greatest tragedy in human history is unfolding before us and all you (the aforementioned posters) can do is whine about losing your beloved toys (because that's really what's behind all of this bs you spew).

Hey guys, out of the gene pool. Now.

"The English language is full of invective

and it all got used." That gave me a huge chuckle Mr. Keillor, one of many. I so enjoy your salon.com articles, thanks!

I'd love you even more if you'd bring a greater variety of musicians on your show, I tend to switch stations when I hear bluegrass/folk/country for the umpteenth time.

Nice.

One short article that sums up 90% of what's wrong with this country, with what the previous posters pointed out being the worst of it.

I agree with OPR.

I voted for Obama but I can't think of ONE campaign promise he's kept. I won't vote for him in 2012 (not that I'll vote for the GOP, needless to say).

The 70% of us who have our heads on straight need to draw the line on single payer, that means getting off of our dufuses and doing something, anything: there are many avenues to advocate, from converting one or two others, to demonstrating, to writing emails, letters, and making phone calls to media outlets and our so-called representatives in government. Health care is a good handle to grab to start taking our country back from Wall Street banksters and other greedy basterds--like those in the GOP and Democratic parties.

Thanks yminale

@ishobo

Hey, I left myself wiggle room by saying "I can't think of..", which was also the truth. I stand corrected, but also stand by the gist of my comment. Obama's either being cagey (which I doubt), or selling out (which is how it sure looks from here).

As for staying home, hell no, I'm going to be actively trying to push the Democrats back toward the left, where they used to be. Well, most of the time anyway.

Even Obama admitted he'd be a rightist in most advanced countries; guess we're not there yet.

Anyone taking bets on the failure of health care "reform" to reform anything?

Hey Alex

Are you not smart enough, or not honest enough, to avoid making the false equivalence between Rep. Grayson's at least somewhat accurate, if not completely true, remark to CONGRESSMEN on the floor of the house and Rep. Wilson's bald-faced LIE and unprecedented breach of House decorum to the PRESIDENT?

Which is it? Just curious.

PS to Salon: 16 letter from this spammer qcolor and you still haven't done anything about it? Too busy shopping?

Let's keep it simple:

Contact your representatives on every level of government you can, starting with the federal. Don't by shy to write, email, or call more than once. I've read a paltry small number of emails or calls can influence a politician.

If you have friends or relatives in states or disctricts represented by these reprehensible corrupt politicians like Max Baucus, then encourage them to do what they can to make sure these people get sent home for good. They don't represent the majority of their constituents in anything but name.

It's do or die time, literally for millions of us.

And yes I'm practicing what I preach.
