Re:Super-smart?

Thank you Allie for pointing out the obvious! After reading one of his screenplays this morning, the first thing that struck me was how poorly written his work was - disturbing yes, but poorly written above all. The first thing that stood out to me was lack of character development and grammar issues (not that I'm some English whiz - but really this was painfully obvious). It amazes me how Cho managed to pass all his classes or even be admitted into the English program. I have to agree that his work seemed like something from junior high from a kid that may not have taken class seriously and on those merits alone he should have been given the boot. I can't help but think that if attention was called to his lack of writing skills and he did eventually flunk out that this probably wouldn't have happened.

Racial Sterotyping are for the ignorant

And how about we just leave it at that? My heart goes out to the Korean-American community and I understand their fears of a backlash, being a minority myself. But racism is not only a problem amongst minorities. People need to acknowledge that whites are also victims of racism and as Victoria L. pointed out, racism is essentially "color-blind". As some earlier poster mentioned there are crazies in every race - and there have been school shootings and violence committed by people of all different races. This time the school violence was committed by a Korean-American, a few years ago by 2 white kids in Columbine. I'm Canadian and a few short months ago, a Punjabi Sikh guy opened fire in an English college in Montreal. Resorting to race and culture as a factor in a school shooting is just plain ignorant, scape-goating and dodging the real issue - that is that the shooter was angry and possibly mentally ill.

Original article: Yes, Sanjaya made the list

Honest to God

As much as I don't care for the list, I have to say i'm happy that Donald Trump topped it. And yes, i agree with the poster that said that Sanjaya is just a teen and shouldn't be on there.

My Aunts were and are an important part of my life

I have to add to MMStewart's post - my aunts have been a driving force in my life for as long as I can remember, even the ones with kids. LW, what you are doing is noble and not in the least bit lame. If it makes you feel anymore consoled, due to the good fortune of having my aunts instrumental to my upbringing, I'll be returning the good karma in less than a year when I move closer to my oldest sister who has a wonderful son just to be closer to him and help raise him while I further my studies and career. She's excited about the help and he's attached to me as well. So I'll be in the same boat as you and it never occurred to me that my actions are lame. Growing up, my aunts were a close part of my family and helped raised us. Some married late and went on to have kids of their own who I'm also close to as well. I moved to Canada a few years ago and the only close relatives I have here are my aunts. Though I'm in my late 20's their maternal presence is what really made a difference in my life. You never outgrow the comfort of a nurturing person who eventually becomes a friend - that's always what my aunts were and I attribute that (along with my parents) as a stable force in my life. Think of it this way, will your neices and nephews think your actions are lame in years to come? Speaking from a person who's close to her aunts, I can attest there's a great likelihood they will think it was the exact opposite of lame.

Original article: Push the envelope, please

Well at least they're trying

While I agree with Czarina on her lack of interest in women's mags I have to commend both female-centred publications for their pieces - especially Seventeen for reaching out to young women in this way. It's not something I expected from them. With that said, Jessica Valenti just posted a book review on Feministing about 2 woman who wrote a tribute to the defunct and original Sassy from years back. Reading this reminds me that we need something of the nature that Sassy was back, especially at a time when abortion rights seem to be at jeopardy.

I suggest

That Planned Parenthood have a "Maggie" for politics and law. If they ever do I nominate the ACLU for the award. What a relief that this issue is finally being tackled in this manner.

So lemme get this straight

Some madman storms into his classroom, starts spraying bullets all round and the victim who is shot TWICE does the heroic act of saving his own life by keeping enough cool to properly bandage himself. And all the public does is fuss about whether or not his penis was captured on national TV and not commending him for his heroism? Oh for god's sake, gimme a break. This kid should be lauded for his bravery and as Californian aptly mentioned - he's got bigger balls than the rest of us. If it was my relative I'd be proud.

Oh please

I would not want to be forced to consider adoption just because I'm poor. And in a developing country, where orphanage facilities are probably not the greatest I'd be even more desperate for an abortion if I was poor, pregnant and couldn't afford to keep the baby. It's imperative that abortion is available to poorer classes - no one ever said this was a matter of elitism. Geez....

Democracy

Oh please.. the U.S. is not the "oldest" democracy in the world. We have Ancient Greece to thank for democracy.
