@reader

hey--

aren't you the same person who said you "knew what palin was talking about" (even though her logic and syntax were garbled) in the previous interview? that had to be one of the most hilarious things i've read in a long time.

i think the mccain campaign needs to hire you right away, so you can interpret for the rest of us, too.

would that it were so...

however, this is no more inevitable than the "permanent republican majority" roviacs were touting eight years ago.

and under NORMAL circumstances, i would say yes, the mccain-palin ticket and their keystone kops approach to campaigning, coupled with the current economic meltdown, is a serious blow to this toxic brand of conservatism.

but the magnitude of the meltdown is a game-changer. a wild card. we don't know how it's going to turn out. some new hole is punched in the economy each and every day.

if people had the wits and wherewithal to see that the republicans shot the bill down not because it fails to protect taxpayers, but because they can't stomach ANY REGULATION WHATSOEVER, they would realize that these ideologically bankrupt fools are not the ones to lead us out of this mess. but i don't think enough people do.

also, keep in mind that whoever inherits this is not going to fix it in a day, a year, or even four years. by then they will have whitewashed the memory of gw bush and proclaimed it all the fault of the dem congress and current administration. and they'll be back.

Original article: Time for a party-line vote?

doesn't matter what the reasons are...

what we're witnessing is a basic collapse of our economic system that is exposing the parallel collapse of our political system. nothing more, nothing less. no one is able to do anything because they are all much more concerned about perception and political gain than actually fixing what's broken. they have no other method for approaching this because for far too long, that's the only method they've used. and we've let them do it.

expect to see more and more money poured into the problem in piecemeal fashion by the fed while both sides dither and blame.

at least someone might have been entertained by nero's fiddling.

can anyone say "the center does not hold"?

Cubbies

My first reaction to the list of 100-win teams: The 2004 Cards won 105 games!? My next reaction: who cares?

I've heard lots of theories about why 100-win teams don't win the World Series, but I don't think it makes a damn bit of difference either way. In the playoffs, anyone can get hot, and with the advent of the wild card, there are that many more teams to contend with in the postseason.

I think the Red Sox are in trouble -- they can't afford to go without Lowell, Drew, and especially Beckett, all three of whom were integral to last season's championship. Anything less than 90% from all of them and they're cooked. Also, they've beaten up on the Angels, what, three times in a row now? Just seems like it's the Angels' year.

I like the Cubs to pull it off this year. Call me sentimental, nostalgic, a traditionalist, but I just can't stomach the idea of another expansion team from Florida -- and are we really ignoring the fact that they actually changed their name from The Devil Rays? -- winning it all.

"She's had a great couple of weeks..."

That's a joke, right? Are we talking about the same person here? Listening to these guys, you'd never know this was the same person who every time she speaks either lies out of both sides of her mouth or can't string together a coherent sentence.

Sigh.

That said, I'm really worried about the "low expectations" thing going into this debate. There are just too many ways that Biden can mess this up, and all Palin has to do is not make a fool of herself -- not at all a sure thing -- and get off a couple of zingers, and poof, half the country will forget all about Couric and Tina Fey.

And given that that same half of the country seems to think it's her, not McCain, who's running for president, it may have a real effect.

"Palin can't rebut indisputable facts."

Hahahaha....

Watch her.
