You are being just as unfair to Waco TX as some folks are to San Francisco. Don't fall into this trap. The Waco Herald-Tribune did a very good job covering the drug bust scandal in Tulia a few years ago.

If I were Mr. Whitehouse (which I'm not) I would offer to withdraw from the race and endose Chaffee's election provided that he promise to vote Democratic in the organization of the Senate. This would make it clear what the election is really about -- not Chaffee vs. Whitehouse but a Democratic Senate vs. a Republican one. This would strengthen Whitehouse's campaign immensely.
Who knows; Chaffee might do it.
Woodward writes:

It's about a month to the election, and the price of oil is falling.
