I've always wondered about those big glassy airline terminals that are super air conditioned in the summer. Sometimes you have to wear a coat in the summer even though all that separates you from a hot, muggy weather are acres of glass. Is anyone considering, in designing new terminals, reducing the air volume of terminals perhaps by reducing the ceiling height, having fewer windows and more insulation, keeping the termperature at 72 degrees instead of 65?
Berkeley is a great school and I went there myself, but I think only a very foolish parent would send their child to Berkeley if the child had a drug problem. Berkeley has lots of drugs and lots of losers who will help your child deepen his addiction. Sure other colleges have drugs too, but at Berkeley drugs run pretty deep. If your child is strong and not into drugs, I would highly recommend Berkeley.
I was at Pete's in San Francisco watching mom's and their kids and it occurred to me that it was impossible to lose money by selling a too fancy stroller. Some people had what was essentially a rolling piece of artwork. I don't think the idea is to provide better care for the baby, but rather to impress other people and other parents that in your family budget there's almost no constraints. It's what used to be called conspicuous consumption. I'm so damn rich I can spend $2000 on a stroller.
Does this Andrew Leonard know anything about economics? Housing starts are way down. That's because there are many unsold houses on the market. Why build more? Builders are being rational by waiting to build more homes until some that are already on the market are purchased. By slowing down on building new homes, they help stabalize the prices of existing homes. This is good news. Salon should hire a different writer who knows which end of the hammer to hit the nail with.
Both Garrison Keillor and John McCain remember the good old days before the young whipper snappers fouled everything up. Why I remember once back in 19 and 48 we were...
The mayor of the largest city in New Jersey and a state senator was convicted of corruption yesterday and yet Salon didn't cover it. Why? Because he was a Democrat.
Here's an idea, the airlines could offer one group of seats for people who want extra legroom, better meals, more videos etc. Maybe they could call it business class. And they could offer a different group of seats for those who are only interested in paying the lowest amount to get from Point A to Point B. They could call that second group coach. The problem would be, of course, that some people would want to pay the low prices offered in coach and yet receive the services of business class and consequently would keep going on the Internet to whine.
Many of the bonds being rated are from government agencies -- municipal bonds, state governments, special districts etc. To have the government rate its own bonds would be a conflict of interest (excuse the pun).
Another problem. When white people get sick, they go to a hospital. When Black people get sick, they go to a jobs program. By that I mean an urban hospital that exists solely to create jobs. Hospitals frequented by whites attempt to hire the best staff so they have the best results and can compete for patients with other hospitals. They also attempt to be as efficient as possible to achieve profitability or to be able to compete on price with nearby institutions. In the inner cities, the jobs programs masquerading as hospitals attempt to squeeze more money out of state legislators by emphasizing how decrepit and in need they are and by hiring the unemployable.
Airlines get bashed far more than any other business that I can think of. Lots of other businesses have service issues or pricing issues or profitability issues, but the screaming headlines and network news investigations are pretty much reserved for airlines. So many postings about seat size, leg room, babies on board, cell phones, safety inspections, prices, bankruptcies, pilot and stewardess issues, employee pensions etc. Really, can anybody think of another businesses where so many people have taken an interest? Few people fly more than 100 hours a year. Most people spend more time sitting on the toilet than sitting on a plane. And yet, there's no end to this high profile whining.
I hate it when Garrison Keillor rips off a piece that Andy Rooney did on 60 Minutes two weeks ago. I guess old folks think alike. Really, if you're too old to fly, take the bus. But please, no whining.
This reminds me of when Marilyn Monroe allegedly committed suicide after being with the Kennedy boys.
These 24/7 news stations do this all the time. Tom Tomorrow must have just locked in because he likes Obama, but you can see this same overkill everyday on CNN and Fox. It would be far to expensive to actually cover 24 hours of news so they pick one topic a day and go at it like a mutt on a hambone. If you are sane, you turn this off right away before your mind gets cluttered with their babbling bulshoi.
She should dump this guy and hook up with somebody who eshews automobiles, eating formerly living creatures, central heating, and clothes made out of anything but hemp. Her new environmental hero can nag her mercilessly about her decadent habits and she will feel fulfilled.
I noticed that tons of Q400s are flying in an out of Newark these days while some big jets look abandoned along the perimenter of the airport. Is this the future of flying? Slowing everything down and flying turboprops could be a Michael J. Fox solution to the energy crisis -- back ot the future.
