The ACLU

The ACLU has fought discrimination against believers and nonbelievers alike. In fact, it has repeatedly sued to enforce Christian's civil rights, and won the vast majority of cases. You do NOT have a right to freedom from religion. People in this country are free to express their opinions, whether others like it or not.

What Gingrich is really complaining about is conservative Christians being unable to use the government and tax dollars to fund their religion. Being prohibited the the First Amendment, the ACLU is on the other side in those cases. That's why the ACLJ exists.

Original article: Mom's a pothead

A couple points...

1. I'm guessing this family is in California. Medical pot is legal under California law. It still isn't under federal, but the feds have zero interest in prosecuting simple possession. Even recreational pot is widely tolerated in California since it's only punishable by a $10 fine, which the cops don't bother with.

So, it's technically illegal, but not practically. All bets are off if she crosses state lines, particularly to Arizona. Same thing with driving under the influence.

2. Pot isn't pain medication. It may be useful for nausea, but not for chronic pain. Managing pain often involves harder drugs, but the overwhelming evidence is that they can be used as prescribed without addiction. Self-medication is not something people with health insurance should try. Get her to go to the doctor, preferable a pain specialist.

Got relatives serving in Iraq?

I do. And the yellow ribbon means we remember they're over there with car bombs and 120 degree heat.

I don't support sending them. I support their getting back in one piece. And impeaching the lying jackass who sent them.

Whichever side of the decision to send them you're on, I think we all agree they should come back safely.

Original article: The disappearing protests

Violence against protesters

The last time I was at the White House, there was exactly one protester. The others have been scared off by violence and espionage directed against them.

I CAN'T attend a high-profile protest. I'm a diabetic who needs to stay alive to raise his children.

The Church is getting played

How is it Catholics are ignoring the Pope's teachings on war, death penalty, poverty, and environment, while making abortion a litmus test? Easy. Political operatives within the American church are focusing on abortion because that's the issue that yields a political advantage to their party, the GOP.

America has had one Roman Catholic president, John Kennedy. Keeping Catholic voters from supporting someone like him is a top political goal, even if it's contrary to most of the Church's social goals.

Realpolitik vs. Impeachment

Realpolitik (German: real ("realistic", "practical" or "actual") and Politik ("politics")) refers to politics or diplomacy based primarily on practical considerations, rather than ideological notions. The term realpolitik is often used pejoratively to imply politics that are coercive, amoral, or Machiavellian. (from Wikipedia)

Bush, Cheney, et al deserve to be impeached based on the constitution. I'm with you 100% there. That's the idealist in me.

But, they wouldn't be removed as that would require 2/3 of the Senate. And, trying might endanger the majorities we have in the House and Senate. That's the realist.

Idealism vs. realism. I prefer the former, but the stakes are too high here. The loss of the White House in 2008 means one of Bush's co-conspirators gets to appoint at least one Supreme Court justice for life (Stevens turns 92 in 2012). That combined with the rest of the cabal (Thomas, Scalia, Roberts and Alito) means the constitution is effectively revoked.

The lesser of two evils is still less evil. The last 6 1/2 years clearly illustrates the price of more evil. Let Pelosi and her schemers do whatever it takes to hold congress and retake the White House. The future of our democracy depends on it.

Original article: When is a plot not a plot?

Not even rubber boots

The oh-so-scary "terrorists" in the Liberty City "plot" didn't buy the boots. The boots were provided by government informants who also concocted the plot. No guns, bombs, chemicals, maps, blueprints, plane tickets, nothing at all except government-provided footwear and wishful thinking.

The difference here? No opportunity for the Director of the FBI to make a speech calling for more money and unchecked power.

Regime change begins at home

You have every right to be concerned about the US. If McBush gets elected, I fear we will have reached a tipping point from which we cannot recover. How? He'll appoint far-right judges who will allow voting rights and freedom of the press to be further restricted to the point where the GOP can maintain a permanent majority.

An invasion of Canada is not in the cards. Instead, the Christofascists are working to destroy your country from within. Weaken your freedoms and infiltrate your institutions to the point where your country is no more free than ours. This is already happening at the border with US agents working in Canada, and the blanket rejection of US political refugees.

I am, of course, referring to the leadership of Prime Minister Harper. With him running your government, you can forget worrying about Washington. You need a Trudeau or Chretien to defend your values, rather than importing Pat Robertson's.

Conveniently, you have an election scheduled for October 14. Regime change begins at home.

Players, grow a pair

The next time the refs make a call like this, walk off the field and forfeit. Why would you help maintain the illusion that the official score represents the actual play on the field?

Look at Ken Blackwell

Ken Blackwell was the GOP candidate for governor in 2006. He is a far-right Christofascist who was vigorously supported by the religious right, particularly by Rod Parsley, megachurch televangelist. He was Secretary of State at the time, and garnered great controversy by supporting voter-supression efforts, including rejecting registration forms that were printed on the wrong paper.

It was a bad environment for the GOP in Ohio. Several scandals surrounded the GOP leadership in the state, and the outgoing GOP governor, Bob Taft, was extremely unpopular.

So, it's no surprise that Blackwell lost. The surprise is the margin, 60.4%-36.8%. A 23% margin in a red state?

Blackwell is African-American.
