The oppression against minority groups, whether they be homosexuals, African-Americans, Native-American, women, or others, all occurred differently. You cannot measure them against one another.
Yes, yes, exactly. Women didn't get lynched, but it was all right for a husband to rape a wife for many, many years. Steinem's editorial continues the zero-sum bullshit that won't let anyone get ahead, and ignores that some of Obama and Edward's policies and rhetoric are more 'woman friendly' than Hillary's.
I love it when feminists just barely out of college or blogging from their homes claim that feminists' battles are won.
I love it when anons talk out of their asses to belittle claims that no one here has made.
Did she seem to downplay the suffering of black men? I do belive that though she has focused on women, she has routinely held that if anyone is oppressed, we are all oppressed.
But you'll notice that 'women of color' don't seem to have any place at all on Steinem's axis-- or she's suggesting women of color should put their gender before their race. Either way, I'm offended.
And to the anon who keeps insisting we're all 'young women and their cats' in some kind of echo chamber-- don't you realize most of us are at work right now? ;-)
That's sure what I'm going to tell my boss when she asks why my project's late... :D
Sounds just as over-the-top as "Ride of the Valkyries!"
In court papers, she checked boxes indicating that Moss owns guns and has a drug or alcohol problem.
Maybe it's just because I live in the sticks, but for me one of those things is not like the other. Does gun ownership make someone violent now? Or just someone black?
Thrasher, Amerigo's grandfather served in Iraq. He's not Iraqi. For that matter, if Thrasher's grandfather was Iraqi, Amerigo could still (and is, I believe), fully 100% American. If you got your head out of your ass, you might have something to contribute. As it is, you're just a disrespectful, shouting ass who never sees a discussion he can't derail.
I think, at the very least, until the matter is settled- Kraft needs to show good faith by suspending Moss.
I realize corporate ownership doesn't have to follow the American rule of "innocent until proven guilty," but I still don't think suspending someone over an allegation is the right thing to do.
I may be biased because Moss is almost the only football player I can recognize, of course.
Or your faith-- in whatever it is you eventually decide to believe-- is meaningless.
Nice advice, Cary. LW, you're strong, and brave, and obviously you've at least found Salon to read. The Internet is full of crazy trolls, but it's also full of fun, sweet, interesting people, some of whom are going through the same issues as you are. Look around and you might find some like minds to help you feel less alone. Good luck.
And that's new units, not counting the used PS2s that are still for sale. Cost-cutting is fine, but they still clearly have a problem.
I think the real issue is that the Patriots management from top to bottom can't stand the Colts GM (Polian) and maybe even Dungy after his comments this year.
Not just the management of the Pats, most of their fans too. And Not just Pats fans for that matter. Hell, I bet a lot of people were happy to see the Colts knocked down so we don't have to hear the sports media worship at the altar of Tony Dungy and Payton Manning this year. (Now the sports media worshiping at the altar of Belachick and Brady, that's another story.)
And just listen to the Talking Heads' "(Nothing But) Flowers" again.
I'm going to check out "Breaking Bad," the promos have been good. But I have to admit Heather's review confirmed some of my worst fears. One-hour downers are just...downers sometimes.
Can you two kiss and make up already? The big kids are trying to talk about football.
I think the Giants could do it-- if Brady keeps slumping and Eli keeps rising especially. But will they do it? That's another story altogether. At least it should be a game worth watching.
I'll definitely check out the book.
But for accuracy's sake, please quit labeling the right to avoid reproduction as "reproductive rights".
Ah, but most women who have abortions have children or go on to have children. "Reproductive rights" are the right to choose when and if you reproduce. That's why so many pro-lifers attack birth control as well as abortion-- they want to take away all choice in the matter. (And apparently some of them want to have an uneducated, unloved, possibly criminal underclass, rather than encouraging motivated, hard-working immigrants to enter this nation of immigrants, but that's another, far more disturbing story.)
You sure don't know much about how many Vermonters have served and died in Iraq. It may have been just a throwaway line to you, but it was a hell of an insult to this Vermonter.

Must be Opposite Day!
I had a professor who served in Vietnam and he said vets' opinions were about fifty-fifty-- half in the 'our hands were tied and we could've won' camp and the other half in the 'we should never have been in the war' camp.
I was taught that the main military problem with Vietnam wasn't lack of imagination or brains on the part of the grunts, it was with the overall strategy, which was geared toward conventional (not guerilla) war and had little to no understanding of Vietnamese culture. (There were also plenty of political problems. More than plenty.)
Garry, thanks for your perspective and your service.
