Well I don't care what you call it
[Read the article: Nightmare on Wall Street]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]4 weeks ago most of you were in favor of small f fascism as in bailing out homeowners who stupidly took the same risk calculations to heart and are now crying poverty.
So you wordsmiths tell me. Which industries deserve a bailout and which do not under which cases? I remember that twice in the last 8 years the Orange county (CA) public employees pension fund has gone broke on paper. The first time for speculating on Enron and the second time speculating on CMO's. That to me is a clear violation of the fiduciary responsibilities that are supposed to guide such pension funds, in fact the Teamster Fund #8 fraud case (1974) send many people to JAIL for doing exactly the same thing. But at the end of the day a few hundred thousand people are left holding an empty bag. I guess we can say screw them, why not?
I guess it sucks to be them, Caveat Emptor and such like that. So - ok if you want to see investment banks crash and burn then I agree as long as we apply the same rules for crashing and burning for the 20-25% subprime mortagage holders as well. They threw the dic, they lost. It seems the 'socialist' and fair thing to do, doesn't it?

Liberals vs Sci Fi Writers
[Read the article: This Modern World]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sci Fi writers (and conservatives) say "The future always sucks".
Liberals say "Today always sucks".

[Read more letters about this article: Here]There is no such thing as physics or structural engineering, physical chemistry or thermodynamics. There's only a vague sense of what uninformed laymen express an equally ignorant opinion about. In the meantime I can dial up a You Tube video of an Airforce test, driving an MD F-4 Phantom II on a rocket sled into a concrete block at near supersonic speed and before your very eyes the plane actually evaporates into a cloud of dust leaving zero identifiable parts larger than the point of a ballpoint pen.

sure it is
[Read the article: Nightmare on Wall Street]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Sometimes it's called corporatism as practiced by Mussolini or, if you prefer, some American politicians.
And in terms of your personal history, what has that got to with anything, really? Let me ask you a question. Do you have an IRA, Roth IRA, Keogh, 401-K or similar plan? So....what do you think they invest in? Unicorn futures? Rainbows and Tofu? Sometimes you kill the proverbial golden goose you wind up hurting yourself.

No but it's a shame you can't read or think
[Read the article: Nightmare on Wall Street]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It has nothing to do with 'the little guy', at least none of the little guys I know. It's more a case of people getting in over their heads to the tune of several hundred thousand dollars more than their income. I wouldn't generally consider the Jumbo mortgage market the pervue of the 'little guy', would you? I know I can't afford a million dollar home, maybe you can.
None the less, how is it different? You're positively happy that public companies that invest your money fail, and yet you feel sorry for homeowners too lazy or greedy to read their own mortgage apps, or heaven forefend, pay an attorney $500 to do it for them. Why is that? And even in the case of 'some' companies that are, according to you, 'evil', there are others no less greedy and stupid, who, through their client base are entitled to special dispensation as well, because it's expedient.
So I'll ask again, which companies are entitled to bailouts and which are not? Do you have an answer or just a bunch of insults? Because if its insults then that's pretty much what I would expect here. I don't think it's a complex question, since you're the ones who posed it in the first place.

So bottomline
[Read the article: George Bush's reality distortion field]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If we're headed for a new dark ages, literally an absolute collapse all the way back to preindustrial ages, what are YOU folks doing about it? I don't think blogging will be a paying job in the non electric economy. I mean really, if you're so certain the end is near you should be taking more steps than predicting it for the rest of us.
I'd really like to hear what the New Survivalists are planning. It might even be helpful. Are you learning to tan hides, weave, and hunt? Are you learning blacksmithy? Have you applied to Colonial Williamsburg, just in case?
By the way, when the canary is dead, then so are you.

It really begs the question, why
[Read the article: The new normal: China blocks YouTube over Tibet]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's not really a "China" issue, it's a "Tibet" issue. The middle class wired generation in China knows to keep its opinions to itself and its nose out of politics. Knowing what happens in far away Tibet has about as much impact on their lives as today's car bombing in Iraq has on us. And we know about it. Are we storming the White House? I tend to think governments are overly paranoid and the populace overly claims to be oppressed. Take a look at Russia, there's no media restrictions there and yet Putin looks to be a new Tsar for life, more or less.
