Thanks for William F. Buckley....

When I was young I read everything I could by William F. Buckley. Even then I didn't agree with his politics, but he was always a wonderful writer, and a big help with vocabulary.

And so a long time ago I learned this word. Never used it in conversation that I can recall, but it's a nice word to have, just to help, at times, to frame your thoughts.

Synecdoche is a synecdoche for trying to find a way to succinctly encapsulate complex subjects.

And I look forward to seeing the movie but it hasn't made it to Seattle yet.

The usual question: where is MSM on this?

If you follow what is going on in Iraq, via Juan Cole and others who speak the truth, you know that what Joe Conason is saying is right on the money.

Why is this not front page news, in very blunt terms? McCain is just wrong. He is typically wrong on almost everything and yet, amazingly, even now the storyline on him involves his experience and expertise.

He is a fraud and potentially a very expensive one.

When, oh when will be finally rid of the warmongers?

Let's face it - she's nuts

Google up Lance Wallnau, who has a sort of cult that is associated with Palin's church. These people are crazier than a shithouse rat.

Who knows why she won't release her medical records? She may have something to hide. She may believe that satan is asking.

She is a corrupt and power-hungry loon who, we hope profoundly, never gets within a parsec of national power.

"Country first"? Not so much.

@Readerreader

Your post is a bit odd but this caught my eye:

First, he plans to tax the *rich* and put 40% of the country on a permanent welfare dole. This is different than food stamps, or other need based programs. He wants to put one part of the country to work for the simple benefit of others. It reminds me of imperial proscriptions, which - like the tax cut plan - showed no regard for traditional property protections.

Haven't heard this one before. The evidence that this is true can be found - where?

@Something [guess what?] stinks

Obama has released a copy of his birth certificate. In fact, this release generated rumors that it was a fake. It isn't.

Anyway, simple internet searches reveal your claims as bogus.

@Readerreader again

Who writes:

I am referring to the tax cut plan. 95% of people get a rebate check, right? But 40% of the country pays no federal income tax. Ergo, 40% receive an Obamo-grant, for nothing.

In other words, you have no evidence for your claim that Obama's tax plan is going to put "40% of the country on a permanent welfare dole". Rather, you offer your misunderstanding of Obama's tax policy.

For example, his "Make Work Pay" credit could result in someone getting up to about 8K in tax credits. Note, though, that this is not welfare. This applies to people who work and pay taxes.

And Obama isn't saying that 95% of us are going to get a rebate check. He says that 95% of us are going to shell out less in taxes. I thought tax cuts were a good thing - but any old complaint about Obama will do.

The whole issue of taxes, Obama's or McCain's or anyone else's is way too complex to reasonably be reduced to bumper sticker slogans.

We have FICA, Withholding, Federal Income tax, local sales taxes - there is a long list of taxes and we all pay at least some of them on a regular basis.

There is plenty of room to argue about the most efficent and the most equitable way of raising tax revenue, and spending tax revenue, but claiming that Barack Obama wants to put 40% of the country on a permanent welfare dole is simply not true.

However, if there is a 40% chance of living the good life, without working, let me know where I can sign up.

@Something stinks (more and more intensely)

You really should think about finding a different screen name. If you don't know why, well, I guess you are talking to your own hand.

Now you are pretending to know enough about Hawaii's birth certificate technology to look at a multi-generation copy on the internet and announce it is a forgery.

The state itself says it is not a forgery so they, and Snopes, must be in on it. But they can't fool right wing internet sleuths, can they?

Hey - what's that sound overhead? Could it be - it is! - it's the black helicopter! It is going to dump thousands of phony birth certificates all over your neighborhood.

Better hide under the bed while you still can....

Being patient with the dense

Readerreader you are now just making a fool of yourself.

Here is something you can try yourself. Write a letter to the county of your birth and request a copy of your birth certificate. They will print a new copy and send it to you.

I was born in 1951. The copy of my birth certificate in our safe deposit box was printed in about 2000 or so. That doesn't mean I am 8 years old, although I wouldn't mind shedding a few years.

Obama was born in Hawaii. It is a fact. Maybe you can prove he is made of crabshells or something, but you are on the wrong track with the birth certificate business.
