If these people actually had to "make it on their own" they wouldn't be republicans. The very experience of struggling to become self sufficient and to make ones own way tends to make a person pretty liberal and understanding of others. The experience of that struggle shows anyone who goes through it just how much luck and circumstances plays into Life.
I know it did for me. I was raised to be a republican by my parents and teachers, and thought myself to be one. Then, at a very young age we found ourselves poor and on food stamps. Not long after that i had to struggle to make my way through school and career with no help. I eventually got myself out, but i saw then what B.S. the entire republican charade is all about.
These people can hold their fantasies because they will never experience reality, being under their mothers skirts, to ever learn the lessons that real work and struggle teach. They will never have those experiences that teach us humility and understanding. Those days and nights when one really never knows how they will ever make it or survive, how much fate and luck play in any life, and how much we all really need each other and how, yes, social programs DO help.
The very characteristics that conservatives claim as their own, tend to make a person very liberal.
WWJD? I guess according to the party of "Jeeezus" He would say "A dying child is better than socialized medicine". As you may recall, in the parable of Lazarus, Jesus checked Lazarus's insurance status before resurrecting him. Not to mention that He had a great policy himself, covered by Humana.
These cons have hit rock bottom. An accomplishment for the party of Shiavo, Katrina and Iraq, i didn't think they could go any lower. I am simply amazed.
I think your taking the saying too literally. "Being mothered" is just a saying to describe a child that is overprotected and spoiled. I am fully aware that fathers can play the same role, but it wouldn't make sense to say these guys are being "fathered".........
It may explain why you keep seeing mothers raised in this context. Unfortunately, we've inherited a language that does have sexist biases, and yet saying one is "mothered" or "hiding behind his mothers skirt" brings to mind exactly the kind of image one is trying to invoke. You dont get the same image saying "hiding behind daddy" or "daddy's boy".
Oh yes, you are correct. My father is a great example of someone who had to work his whole life, from the ground up, and then become resentful of others in the same struggle. Even after we went broke and he had to get a few govt "handouts" he still swore by the republican mantra. The hypocracy of his stance never once seemed to bother him, even when it was pointed out to him many times.
As with all things human one can only generalize. And just like a higher education TENDS to make one more liberal, and just like exposure to different types of people tends to make one more accepting, i think that having to struggle on ones own TENDS to make on appreciate certain liberal stances.
For example, how many people who claim to be republican turn around and support things like S.S., or Schip for that matter? How many go straight to the unemployment office when they are laid off? I think with many of these types of people what you get is a cry for CREDIT. They want their sacrifices and sufferings acknowledged, and for whatever reason, don't feel that they are.
I still think on the majority of occasions, the experience of struggle and becoming self realized makes a person more open to liberal ideology than not. But, like Clarence Thomas, there are always people who seam to go the opposite route.
Well, Can, even a person who a sleeps their way to the top is showing more "republican" values than a nepotist. If Hillary and Ariana actually did sleep their way to the top, then at least they worked for it even if with their own bodies.
Even sex workers show more self sufficiency and work ethic than a nepotist does. A person who sleeps for money or advantage, while being easier than actually creating the opportunity otherwise, actually has to do SOMETHING and does make a severe sacrifice in order to succeed. A Nepotist does nothing but hold his hand out.
In short i'd have alot more respect for a hooker than a nepotist.
.........with some serious back pains. Once i read GG post today i realized it was the knife in my back the dems decided to put there. In truth i never held out much hope that they would be much better, but i didn't think they'd go farther than the republican congress to give Bush everything he wanted.
Live and learn.
I posted and contributed to Dodds campaign. I also sent a letter to Obama, Hilary stating why i WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM, even if they are up against Satan himself.
I'd rather this country go all the way down the tubes already, than to continue voting for these clowns. The fact is, maybe this country needs a wake-up call. Lets let it get real bad already and maybe all the morons out there will unplug their I-pods long enough to realize that they are heading right off a cliff.
Not that i put much faith in the People anyway, a dumber generation never existed. I wonder if they've put something in the water sometimes to make modern Americans so damn complacent, stupid and narcissistic.
