Immunity vs. Amnesty

doesn't retroactive immunity = amnesty?

-- lupercus

I was thinking about this too. I think that those on the left who oppose this legislation have taken to calling it "amnesty" to invoke all the nasty frames that the right has attached to that word in re immigration. The only problem with this frame is that it leaves out all the implications that fiver mentioned earlier wrt legal paperwork trails. That seems to my (in this regard uneducated) mind to be a problem, but it's not one that would register on most people's radar.

RMP

A lot of those old testament types think that truth and death is retroactive.

I just figured you were channeling Bush here. ;->

OT - segue to pumpkins

I'll bring a pumpkin to the the District of Columbia's inner Beltway? It could not hurt. I'll bring a "Red Hubbard" and a "One Too Many" pumpkin.

"One Too Many" sounds almost too beautiful to eat! My sister bought me a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. We always get together and make it a night. Very messy and lots of fun.

We've been invited to a Halloween party. The theme is "Come as whatever you wanted, or still want, to be when you grow up." I thought of wearing an earth brown long-sleeve shirt I have that says "Life Is Good" on the front. I always wanted to be an optimist when I grew up. Still do.

Which sort of segues back on topic in that Glenn's challenges to the soothsayers out there, the people who comment on this blog, and many others out there in the Blogiverse are the face of what gives me a chance to be an optimist today (whether or not I am entirely grown up).

Which loops me back around to what I really wanted to be when I was little - an Indian brave. Didn't work out. While feathers in headbands only raised eyebrows, it turns out ours wasn't really much of a 'loincloth' kinda neighborhood.

Early pumpkin out...

I'm on the early pumpkin outta town tomorrow. I feel a pumpkin cheesecake dream coming on.....

(I like any kind of cheesecake!)

I'm tired!

A long work day on what should be a non-work day should be outlawed. And I come back to the Salon to find Bebop-o spreading rumors about the quality of my early-morning hairdos! Well, just harrumph! ;->

Been gone too long and this was a tough post to come back to, but I'm glad you're on this Glenn. I'm also glad that there are people who are willing to discuss this with you even if it is 'off the record'. I have no qualms about you and any 'slippery slope' (although I understand why CO brought it up). Everything you write about is based in solid moral, as well as legal, reasoning ("reason" being the key) and I doubt that even a complete deluge of 'off-the record' info could dissolve your principles.

For the record, I may have a few tiny knots in my hair on any given morning, but it's a far cry from any sheep I know. More like a Persian cat having a 'bad fur' day.....

@Jim White

bebop-o

Sometimes I think you have a real gift of vision.

I think he has a crystal ball hidden somewhere in his blueberry bushes. B has done this with me and others here as well. What was it Yoda said in the Star Wars movies? Something about there being a "disturbance in the Force"? B senses that and brings out his crystal ball to gaze at our world (not navel-gazing, our B) and make sure all is well with us.

It's a unique and wonderful talent and I'm glad he shares it with us.

Kovie

I used to have a mini rosebush on my balcony, but last winter's record chill killed it. I think Dick Cheney had something to do with it.

While I wouldn't rule out the Cheney-effect (I agree that he looks like he could kill just about anything he looks at - or at least give it serious frostbite), mini rosebushes are particularly sensitive to cold. If they are in an above-ground pot then their roots are pretty much completely exposed to freezing conditions. You might be able to overwinter it better if you wrap the pot in burlap and place it in the sunniest spot you have on your balcony, especially if the sun hits a nearby wall (which will retain heat).

I grow hardy banana trees in Ohio by putting them in an east facing bed against a brick wall (creates a warmer micro-climate). In fall I mulch them heavily with leaves. They are pretty huge right now, 2 stories tall.

I really hope Cheney hasn't been to the US Botanic Garden in the past couple of days. I'm going to spend a couple of hours there today before heading back to Ohio. It would really be a cryin' shame if he's had the time and energy to get around to the few little things left to us to enjoy without fear and loathing.

I hope Kovie is reading a crystal ball and that Congress will give the USAs a Buddha boot

I'll see what I can do with Buddha's foot while I am there, B. Wouldn't it be nice if I could take it over to the Hill and remind Mr. Leahy of S.214? I wish Kovie was his close advisor. Then maybe they would actually do something about all this law-breaking going on.

I will smile at the DC cops - um a really cranky bunch, aren't um? Not sure they wouldn't just arrest a small, mid-western girl offering blueberry wine in a soggy cup!

Maybe they would like some hot pepper seeds instead?
