"I wonder what BushCo thought would happen with all their accumulated power once a Democrat became President?"

When I get tired of all the outrageous excuses/reasons for this administration's abuses of power offered up by my aquaintances on the right I say to them, "So I assume you will still be ok with this once Hillary is President." Conversation comes to a screeching halt and I am mightily entertained by how purple a person's face can become when struck with sudden apoplexy.

I suppose I could be more generic and just say "...once a democrat is President", but Hillary seems to really hit them where it hurts, in their overrated 'nads.

'"We win, they lose," at least the meaning of "We" is pretty clear. Then I thought a little more...I think they're talking about more than just the United States or our military.'

David, the first thing that jumped into my mind was "we", meaning "neocons", and "they", meaning pretty much everyone else.

jpmillertx, my vote goes for the first cheer although they're all pretty insightful.

'Let's go out with a buttered blueberry biscuit, male or female, be kind to each other, and take a soar into a blue sky with all the buxom harmless bubblebees and pretty butterfly's.'

The images that bloom in your words leave me speechless. The smiles, tears and outright laughter they induce are not to be missed. I am privileged to have found you, and so many of the other posters, here in GG's blog. Thanks to all.

"Knowing how lazy, incompetent and/or corrupt many local police departments are here, giving them this kind of unchecked power is frightening and gives me the willies"

"By what magical process do we assume that the same adjectives don't apply to Federal officials?"

Oh, the adjectives apply, but it's sort of like SARS or avian flu, the closer it gets to home the scarier it is for those unable to project into the future or use their imagination. My family recently had a tragic encounter with the local SWAT team. They raided my sister's house and killed her fiance. All without justification. We don't need to worry about "giving them this kind of unchecked power". They already have it and are using it and spying is just the tip of the iceberg.

  • And their similarity to a nature program...

[Read the article: Chris Matthews on Fred Thompson's sexiness and smells]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It is indeed difficult to avoid noticing the physical similarity among so many of our right-wing warriors who mock the alleged effeteness and lack of masculinity of their political opponents and who engage in chest-beating war dances and emphasize the need for manly courage and resolve, in the form of more wars fought by others, brutal interrogation techniques and the like.

...I once saw on National Geographic. Only it was chimpanzees in the program. Funny how I thought it interesting and entertaining to watch the real chimps and their antics.

Matthews, Limbaugh and their macho whatever-sniffin' posse?

    Not so much.

I took your advice and downloaded Firefox and the repagination add on. But when I came back to view the comments I don't really see any difference. What should change?

Sorry, I'm pretty ignorant about browsers but always eager to learn. Thanks for the advice.

Glenn, I pre-ordered your book a while back at the same time I bought your first book. Can't wait to read it. Thanks for all you do.

  • Relentless incrementalism

[Read the article: Little outbursts of journalism -- what causes them?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"changing our public discourse is a slow, grinding, difficult process. Any changes that occur, any progress that is made, will be made only incrementally, one day after the next. Each individual change is usually so slight as to be imperceptible, but aggregated, those changes can be substantial."

Apologies if this has already been stated (guilty of not reading all comments before posting), but this is it in a nutshell Glenn. And the necessity of this type of approach has been understood and implemented by the right in all its many manifestations for many, many years now. They have applied this approach to everything they do from legislation, to elections to the Supreme Court and we have been suffering from the "success" of this application for a long time - most acutely in the last 7 years - and will continue to suffer for years to come.

I am thankful for folks like you who recognize that the path back from all of this destruction will require the same relentless pursuit and who are willing to devote themselves to accomplishing it. There is, without doubt, a high burnout rate on the part of many, but the stakes are too high to not recognize the significance and need for this kind of persistence.

  • Voinovich growing a pair.....

[Read the article: The GOP is the party of the Iraq war]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Voinovich to Rove: Bush Has ‘F—ed’ Up The War, Needs To Start Thinking About His Legacy

In private, Voinovich is more blunt, using a profanity to describe the White House’s handling of Iraq by charging the administration “f–ed up” the war."

    Anonymous @ 10:58am

As an Ohio resident I try to be supportive of our Republican Senator whenever he seems to be contemplating the merits of growing some stones of his own, but too often it seems to be just noise for the sake of noise. Rarely does he back it up with actions. Nice to see him using language the White House understands.
