  • Take some time off

[Read the article: I'm completely irresponsible and I live at home mooching off my parents]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I usually agree with Cary's advice...and it's not that I disagree with him here, I just think my advice is better in this case.

I went to a highly-rated (and very expensive) private university. My parents took out loans, I took out loans, and I got grants. (I'm 39 and still paying the loans but it was worth it.) It was a big deal to my family for me to go to this nice reputable expensive school, but I started booking bands at a club and losing interest in school. I decided to take a semester off and pursue my interest in the music scene.

My parents freaked out. They were NOT on board with this plan. But I finally convinced them, after promising a million times that I would go back after 1 semester. (Even though they finally gave in they still didn't really believe I'd go back.)

I promised to support myself entirely for that semester, and then I was going to need their help again once I went back to school. So I took the semester off, I booked bands and bartended, and then I went back and finished my degree. I graduated a semester late. It was one of the smartest decisions I ever made. It got the working in a bar thing out of my system (though I did continue working part-time the rest of my college career) and it gave me a big boost of confidence to know I could support myself.

Try to get your parents on board with something like this. I do think you need to get out of their house and have some independence, just so you have the confidence that you CAN be independent. Then you can go back and live at home while you finish school (if you choose), confident that you'll be just fine once you join the real world.

    Whatever you decide, good luck.

  • Beef with the survey 2

[Read the article: Roundup: Wikipedia debates child porn]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I was surprised by how poorly designed this survey is. As noted before, it's geared towards working mothers or anyone with familiy responsibilities, not for single women. And there's so many other things it doesn't account for. It asks how many hours you spend with a spouse or partner, without asking if you HAVE a spouse or partner. It asks how you spend your break at work....as if every woman has a "break period." What about freelancers or sales reps or anyone who doesn't work traditional hours? I don't think anyone with a flexible work schedule has a traditional "break" during the day. Sometimes I eat at my desk, sometimes I take a long lunch and run errands and get lunch.

I'm sure the study will yield some interesting findings, but they're not going to be too reliable based on the poor survey design. I know, I design surveys for a living. Bad surveys = bad data.

You say you're a mental health care professional....which is weird, since in a letter you posted on Dec 13, you claim to be a lawyer.

  • You're comparing this dress to one with spaghetti straps?

[Read the article: Should this dress be illegal?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Spaghetti straps and strapless dresses are one thing, tiny strips of fabric just covering the nipples is another. Most strippers start the evening more covered than this.

It's barely appropriate for an adult night club, it's definitely not appropriate for a high school prom.

[Read the article: Should this dress be illegal?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The school did have a dress code for the prom, and it was distributed before the event. The dress code stated that no more than 1 inch of midriff could be exposed.

  • I don't know how I feel about this

[Read the article: Stillbirth is not necessarily murder]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While I don't think we should police everything a woman consumers during pregnancy, I'm not real comfortable defending a woman's right to do cocaine while pregnant.

  • the educated consumer

[Read the article: I need more ideas! Where do they come from?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"drugs do not have any short/long term effects if used in a correct setting...., im sorry but you remind me of a young me, a young confused writer trying to make it on his/her own but i think if you need inspiration try a RECREATIONAL substace besides alcohol tobacco crack coke or speed...., if your looking for inspiration try weed, lsd, mushrooms(prefeably of the psychedelic variety ),MESCALINE (especially) but yes along with ideas you will find questions and answers but most of all i garuntee if you do these things in a SMART contralled state/enviroment you will find what your looking for and much much more. INSPRIATION=Psychedelic"

I just had to repost this because it's cracking me up and has posed a chicken or the egg question for me. Did the educated consumer write mostly incoherent letters riddled with grammatical errors and misspellings before doing lots of drugs, or as result of the drugs?

  • Don't go into publishing

[Read the article: What should we do with our $3 million?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Ditto on the advice (I can't find the letter now) not to use the money for publishing if you ever want to see it again.

There's an old joke in publishing.

Q: How do you become a millionaire?

A: Take 10 million and open a bookstore.
