  • Our Ancestors Fought A Revolution Once

to end the tyranny of unchecked executive power. That anyone would suggest that a "unitary executive" is good for the country reveals a profound ignorance of and/disrespect for the United States of America, its Founders, and all those who have sacrificed so much to keep it true to the principles of liberty and the rule of law.

The Constitutional remedy for these abuses is impeachment and removal from office. Congress can and should call this Administration into account, not only for its widespread abuses of political power, but to demonstrate to all future executives that the Congress and the People will still watch and judge their actions and will terminate their tenure in office prematurely should they reach beyond the Constitutional limits of their power.

  • A Whole New Direction Needed

I, along with most posters here, wish fervently that Congress would quit dithering around and settle down to the business of correcting the nation's course, which in many instances means taking a 180 degree turn from the neocon agenda. First order of business is to impeach and remove Dick Cheney from office. This lying, threatening coward has been behind many of Bush's policy decisions and must be removed forthwith.

Once a new, less toxic Republican vice-president has been confirmed by the Senate, the House should move for Bush's impeachment and removal. All of this takes time, so Congress ought to get started on it right away! If you haven't written to your Representative in support of Dennis Kucinich's Articles of Impeachment against Richard B. Cheney, do it now! No sense just bitching on Salon when you can take a substantive step toward bringing the crazies into account!

Just to limit myself to 5 items that are long overdue for serious policy reform let me mention

    1) Foreign policy: get out of the bluster, threaten, and attack mode and start finding common ground for cooperation. Stop using the U.S. military as an instrument to seize the resources of other nations on behalf of the wealthy corporations.

    2) Stop illegal immigration: build a wall, fine employers, do whatever it takes. We have 300,000,000 people in the country already and multiple environmental problems in consequence. National independence means local people perform necessary tasks with adequate compensation. Stop the exploitation and semi-slavery of hiring illegals.

    3) Energy policy: The most optimistic projection is that petroleum production will peak in about 20 years and may already have peaked. We need a crash program to develop renewable sources. Hydrogen cars are NOT the answer!

    4) Universal Medical Insurance: The current patchwork of employer-funded and public dole medical insurance is vastly inefficient and leaves many people to suffer and die and/or be bankrupted because they can afford the premiums demanded to pay for this travesty.

    5) Respect the Constitution: Objectively speaking, compared with the other problems we face, "global terrorism" is like a flea bite vs malignant cancer and can largely be solved by readjusting foreign policy. We must insist on a government that operates transparently and does not infringe on our liberty, but respects the law and American ideals and traditions. No dystopian Radio Frequency ID chips, no identity cards, no Total Information Awareness data bases...these are tools of tyranny and are unacceptable.

    I could go on...

  • The John Birch Society and George W. Bush

The question for Bush is how can me make this deal with the devil, without destroying his base of support from John Birch Republicans who are still fighting the Cold War?

You must have been misinformed. The John Birch Society likes George W. Bush about as much as they used to like Joe Stalin or Nikita Khrushchev. His immigration policy is anathema to them, as are his unconstitutional power grabs. Here are a couple of headlines from the John Birch Society website (www.jbs.org):

"Court Strikes Down Bush Grab for Power"

"JBS ACTION ALERT: Support the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act"

The John Birch Society is alarmed by the Security and Prosperity Partnership brought into being by George Bush as it compromises American sovereignty.

John Birch Society members are much more in tune with the libertarian positions of Rep. Ron Paul than they are the authoritarian positions of Bush, Cheney, Giuliani, and their ilk.

The John Birch Society is committed to maintaining the political independence of the United States and to insuring the personal and political liberty of its citizens. It is unalterably opposed to the WTO, NAFTA or any organization that infringes on U.S. sovereignty, especially the "New World Order" espoused by both Bushes.

Now that Sunni insurgents are being armed by Coalition forces (U.S.) to fight Al-Qaeda, and the Sunnis and Shiites are blowing up each other's mosques, victory by mutual annihilation is inevitable. The collective Islamic insurgents of all stripes are "in their last throes". Progress is being made...stay the course...blood for oil...
