If you are reading this post, you are sitting in front of an internet-connected computer and probably share the concern of most expressed here that the office of Vice-President of the United States is currently being held by a man who habitually uses the powers, rank, and prestige of his office to further a narrow political agenda that is contrary to the best interests of this nation. As such, you may use your time to vent by posting a letter here or just fuming and ranting at the spouse and kids. Please don't kick the dog!
Do everyone a favor and go to Representative Dennis Kucinich's website, read the Articles of Impeachment he drew up against Mr. Cheney and presented before the House several weeks ago, then write or email your Congressional representative demanding that action be taken. Yes, I already did this a couple of days after the Impeachment Articles were introduced and got a polite letter back from my (Democratic) representative, telling me that impeachment was not being actively pursued at this time. Only a veritable flood tide of letters is going to move Congress to do its duty and remove this hideous obscenity from the central offices of our Executive Branch and from the dais of the Senate Chamber.
Adultery, a concept with which he appears to have first-hand experience.
Why is it that whenever I look on the Internet or read the newspaper, I run across story after story of George W. Bush, his sidekick Dick Cheney, or their minions conniving to come up with new ways to disrespect and neutralize our heritage of liberty, bankrupt the federal government, and make America the laughing stock of the world? The Constitution was written to insure that mechanisms of corrective action could be initiated as needed when politicians no longer served the public interest. Bush & Co. are leading the country in a tailspin. Congress needs to exercise its function under the Constitution to impeach and remove from office those whose actions are detrimental to the general welfare. Now that Bush has united the country against him, Congress must act!
Now the House of Representatives and Senate need to render their judgment on Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, in accordance with the United States Constitution, to establish the principle that no person or clique may stand above or outside the law.
Their failure to act under the present circumstances may be the signal event in the transition of the American government from a constitutional republic to an oligarchical empire. The lethargy of the Congress and the People may be interpreted as acquiescence of this change and the end of the experiment in self government with protected personal and political rights. The party that controls the instruments of compulsion and violence will hereafter exercise the power while the party that represents equity and justice will be eclipsed in the dark of an authoritarian nightmare.
I have repeatedly contacted my Congressman on the issue of impeachment, but his reply is that
"I appreciate your passion for this issue. However, I agree with my colleagues in Congress that efforts to pursue impeachment would - at this time - seriously detract from our ability to lead our country in a new and positive direction."
Since the Democrats became the majority in Congress in January, they have caved in to Bush's demands multiple times. Unless this latest event galvanizes them into action, I see little hope for relief or hope.
with his buddy Dick Cheney. They'd love to strut their stuff in downtown Bagdad decked out in Kevlar body armor and toting the latest in American firepower. They could shout "Bring it on!" and amaze all onlookers with their fighting prowess. Or they could die heroes instead of fading into oblivion, known as the worst kind of chickenhawk cowards.
The Decider don't need no stinkin' procedures. The Decider decides the decisions and they stay decided!
Keith Olbermann speaks the truth powerfully and bluntly in the time-honored tradition of Americans who have fearlessly confronted repressive authoritarianism. His is the kind of reasoning used by Paine and Jefferson to incite the colonists to throw off the yoke of imperialist Britain and seek a new form of government, inviting the participation of citizens, deciding policy in open debate, and holding the executive accountable for abuses of its power. The degree of subversion of the Constitution by the Bush Administration is without precedent in our history. The Congress needs to develop a spinal column instead of continuing to be craven, servile worms and bring this Administration to justice.
On the other hand, if the people are too busy painting their houses or planning their vacations to answer the clarion call and speak out, we can just go quietly into the dark night of the totalitarian state the neocons have planned for us all along.
Ingsoc. And, oh, by the way, Big Brother IS listening to you, even if he hasn't quite got around to watching you 24/7.
because you, like most Americans, have ceded to the corporate-controlled media your legal and constitutional right to select the best candidate. Of course, only those who do obeisance to the corporate programs of militarism, globalism, and, obviously, corporatism, the exploitation of government by large private entities, qualify for all the free campaign coverage and plaudits by pundits. The United States is becoming more and more like the old Soviet Union, in which candidates for elective office were chosen by higher Party apparachniks. So I'm giving my support equally to Democrat Dennis Kucinich and Republican Ron Paul, both men of principle and integrity, be they anointed by mainstream media or not as front runners. There's really not much positive one can say about the cravenly opportunistic political chameleons who have been given that designation.
