Original article: Oprah, don't leave us!

I stopped watching years ago

Her program for years has been about one thing, and one thing only - Oprah. Giving stuff to the audience on a regular basis to buy their adoration, fawning over celebrities, it's all sickening. She used to have a show which tackled important subjects, such as wife abuse, drug addiction, things which touched on everyday peoples' lives, then it all got 'inspirational', and went downhill from there. She could have done programs about the disenfranchisement of black communities in the 2000 and 2004 elections, but no, what do black people and their problems have to do with her? She's made her billions, and lives in a nice shiny coccoon.

Just go away, Oprah, the quicker the better.

Unabannable Bastard

I think I love you!

Shouldn't it be "Shone a light"

In the title?

Just another example of someone not being proof-read.

Anybody remember Morton Downey Jr?

This guy is just the latest incarnation.

He's going to flame-out big time, bank on it.

In 1989, as fascination with Downey's TV show began to wane, he was involved in an incident in a San Francisco International Airport restroom in which he claimed to have been attacked by neo-Nazis who painted a swastika on his face and attempted to shave his head. Some inconsistencies in Downey's account (e.g., the swastika was painted in reverse, suggesting that Downey had drawn it himself in a mirror)

I think he was referring to the electorate or the election

The way I read the article, he was talking about how the right wing are angry about how the election turned out, and that they'll just have to put up with what the new administration does.

"Conservatives shouldn't get too upset about the way liberals have taken over Washington since President Obama won election, he said. "We've got a reason to explain why we believe in the kind of America we believe in," Blunt said. "You know, you can't control everything there is in life that you'd like to control."

That's all folks. And I'm as lefty as they come.

GK, I'm so glad you're OK

We need your calm voice more and more these days.

And your final paragraph was perfect.

Stay well.

Original article: "A really good man"

My favorite guilty pleasure movie is "Point Break"

Turn off your brain and just enjoy.

RIP Patrick, you gave a lot of us a good deal of pleasure and escape.

Blame the TV networks

Honestly, I watch and DVR very little mainstream network programming nowadays because it's all so much dreck. I DVR via DirecTV, but only premium channel stuff like HBO original programming, the BBC and (maybe) something like "Rescue Me" on FX.

The mainstream networks have all given themselves up to "reality TV", and quite honestly, the stuff sucks.

Why waste my time watching this stuff?

BTW I'm also a huge Netflix user, getting through 6-7 videos a week, but I mainly use it to catch up on old classic TV series, (no commercials).

Why do you think the world's leading drugs, scans, proceedures were discovered in the USA. Do we have a lock on brains? I don't think so

A (very) quick google search furnished me with the following facts:

Inventor of the CT Scan:

Sir Godfrey Hounsley (Funny - he doesn't sound American)

http://www.diagnosticimaging.com/dimag/legacy/dinews/2004081901.shtml

Inventor of the EKG:

Augustus Waller at St Mary's Medical School (London UK)

http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blcardiac.htm

First Total Hip Replacement:

1962 Sir John Charnley of England

http://www.mayoclinic.org/tradition-heritage/first-total-hip-replacement.html

First cardiac stent - actually a French guy did this - another socialist hell-hole

http://www.ptca.org/des.html

First SUCCESSFUL blood transfusion - yep -another British guy,

Sir James Blundell in 1818

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_transfusion#The_first_successes

I could go on.

Are your brains locked up, Zazee?

Original article: Obama's healthcare horror

The reason I dropped my Premium membership is still spewing her dreck

I don't give Salon the satisfaction of hitting on this moron's "column".

I just read the letters to tell me what I've saved myself - again.

Thank you all for the yeoman work you've done in shovelling through this shit, I just wish Salon would end the co-dependency.

Original article: Is the Airbus a lemon?

Not so fast, Patrick

What about the A320 which crashed in the Mediterranean last year, which was blamed on an 'uncommanded power surge". In other words, the computer took it upon itself to dramatically increase power and cause the aircraft to surge upward and then stall.

http://poneke.wordpress.com/2009/01/18/airbus/

I'm increasingly wary about the Airbus line because it seems the computer cannot be over-ridden in certain circumstances, and the recent horrifying event over the Atlantic does nothing to alleviate my fears.

Well said, Varmint

It made me wonder just how old some of these 'reporters' are, nowadays. Maybe this was Amanda Fortini's first funeral or memorial service?

I found the remark strange and lacking in empathy.

Original article: Michael Jackson's sad exit

Thank you, Joan

As one who mourned how the ferociously talented little boy was used and abused by his family, I've been appalled at the hagiography going on. Even our local public radio station felt it had to cover the ceremony live.
