Suspension for PDA, non-academic information sharing (re: schroder)

Perhaps you didn't read the whole article, but the student was suspended for PDA at school, which is against the school's rules. (Drug use is illegal--as you pointed out--so it is not a great analogy, I just picked it as something else that's presumably against school rules.) As other posters have pointed out, the lawsuit should be about the unequal and discriminatory enforcement of the PDA rule, since it has not been enforced with straight couples. Instead, the lawsuit is about the fact that the principal told the parents the reason their daughter was being suspended (PDA with fellow student X). (This is all based on what I've read in the media.) In my opinion, a lawsuit about the sharing of information with parents, because they might react badly, seems like it sets a bad precedent. If anything, there needs to be more communication between schools and parents, not less.

Also, you seemed to imply that information that parents are entitled to is limited to academics (ie grades). I strongly disagree. Did you notice if my child ate her lunch today? What is my child's general demeanor in the classroom? Out of the classroom? Does my child have any friends? Who are they? Anything about the group dynamic that I should know about? What was my child wearing today? (some change after they get to school) None of these questions are directly related to academics, but could be more broadly related to the child's education, and in any case as a parent I should be entitled to ask.

Recruitment of Women

As this is Broadsheet, we should also be celebrating Google's outstanding commitment to recruiting and retaining women employees through scholarships, conferences, and extensive outreach to computer science women's orgranizations at universities. As a female graduate student in computer science (a rarity I'm afraid!), I have appreciated their strong presence and support. Their efforts are paying off--they have a much, much higher percentage of female employees than most tech companies. By way of comparison, I've worked at companies with 50+ employees where I was the only woman on the technical team (not including HR, receptionist, etc). I'd like to think their more balanced workforce is having a positive impact on their products!

Standing with the Duke-Stir

What a bizzare choice of issues! Not only is it completely useless, but it also oh-so-flatteringly connects her with the disgraced Randy "Duke" Cunningham. Lets not forget that the famously unproductive congressman is well known (at least in his home area) for the fact that the only legislation he ever worked on (aside from what we now know was his "paid" work) was a silly constitutional ammendment to ban flag burning. Well, wouldn't want that ball to drop, so I guess now that he's resigned, it's good she has quickly stepped in to fill the void! (groan)

Original article: Apple juice, straight up?

This parent says, "Bravo!"

As a mother of 10-month-old twins, I think the owner is right on. Cafes, maybe, but bars? Not the place for kids.

Great sign....for Sacramento or D.C.

They should move this billboard to Sacramento or D.C. Certainly any pregnant woman is more than aware that "Breast is best" having heard this ad nauseum. But people who have not witnesssed or experienced trying to breastfeed a newborn have no idea how time-consuming and all-encompassing a task it is. We think that 6 weeks of maternity leave is generous. But consider this--until minimum 2, more likely 3 months old (or older), babies must be fed every 2-3 hours. It takes about 20 minutes to breastfeed a baby (much longer than that for newborns). So, for a woman who is breastfeeding to go back to work at 6 weeks, she hasn't had more than 2 1/2 hours of sleep at a time yet!! Think about it, how would you do at your job after 6 weeks of only getting 2 hours or so of sleep at a time, around the clock, NO breaks EVER, for the entire 6 weeks? As I said, this pattern continues until the baby is 2 or 3 months. This is a herculean task to say the least.

Hence my suggestion, lets put this billboard in Sacramento or D.C., where it is really needed, to educate our lawmakers about the dire need for more walk-the-walk not talk-the-talk support of new mothers.

Original article: I Like to Watch

re: Affected

Amen, amen and amen. Santino probably makes for good ratings with his drama. Chloe and Nick are amazing, but too well grounded for that. I don't necessarily have a problem with the producers using Santino as a ratings ploy, but I will have a problem if he actually wins it.

Original article: Open adoption, broken heart

Bravo Dawn Friedman and Salon

Most riveting thing I've read in a while. Thank for sharing this. Social workers and adoption professionals should print this out and give it to prospective adoptive and birth parents.
