  • Thanks for reminding me

why I quit flying. When I went through Naval Aviation training in 2000, it was all the rage for guys to get out as soon as they were eligible and go to the airlines. That didn't work out so well for them post 9-11. I had "Top Gun" dreams, but right from the start, I always thought flying was nothing but miserable drudgery, hard work, airsickness, boring holding patterns, near death experiences, Iraqi bullets, and dead friends. After more than 1300 hours in the Bell Supercobra, I called it quits in 2005. I haven't missed it even once. Flying looks like loads of fun from the ground, but unless you have a genuine passion for it, you are better off cleaning public toilets for minimum wage. How much are they paying you now, Patrick? Are you over the federal poverty line?

  • Well done, Salon.

I can only wish I had the intelligence, foresight, and moral courage that these NCO's displayed when they wrote that letter. They will be remembered as true American patriots alongside Nathan Hale, James Stockdale, David M. Shoup, Paul Ray Smith, Michael Murphy, Jason Dunham, and Todd Beamer. Let us not forget them.

  • Let me explain why this will never be solved...

I live in Northern Michigan, which as everyone knows, is suffering from the downturn in the auto industry. We've been in a one state recession for years now. Up here, unemployment is close to ten percent, and much higher in the wintertime. A tank of propane gas now costs $1000, and I just bought diesel today for $4.19 a gallon. There are a record number of foreclosures in the papers, and property values are tanking. As you drive through the small towns, it seems like every other house is for sale. Bottom line: Times is tough. I don't see anyone up here rushing out to get the latest plug in hybrid or super efficient brand new house any time soon. Food costs are skyrocketing, wages are stagnant, and most folks are one serious illness away from complete financial ruin. What do we expect us to do, start caring about some global climate catastrophe that may happen in the future? Let me tell you, we welcome global warming. We had a hard, hard winter up here, with subzero temps in November, and the snow still flying on Easter Sunday. Bring it on, we say! Just give us some kind of economic break up here, we're drowning. If you gave us a choice between global warming and $5.00 gas, we'll take global warming, thank you very much. We just can't afford to care about carbon emissions.

  • Enlisted officer?

When one enlisted officer says to another, "We need to make sure the stupidity in this company doesn't roll down too hard on our guys,"

    Hey Heather,

What's an enlisted officer? Why don't you get in your Prius, drive down to Camp Pendleton and learn the acquaintance of a few real "Warrior Poets"?
