Cool it, Glenn.
You have no right to tell me what I am "feigning."
You have bloody "jumped the shark" Glenn.
When you have too much constant outrage and self-righteousness, people just tune you out...
Like me...
I am a grassroots Obama worker in Virginia. Those of us in the trenches, trying to "turn Virginia Blue," see a cover like that of the New Yorker and cringe.
I guess we aren't very jolly after being called communists and socialists -- having cute little balloons returned to us at a county fair with "Obama" printed on them with a look of disgust by someone hissing "Not a balloon with HIS name on it!" as their toddler looks on in bewilderment.
Yes, my funny bone is a bit hard to find these days!
We are trying to win an election and save a country. We can sit around and read our sophisticated magaizines next January.
It would be nice if the millions of freaking progressives around the damn country could help us pull a bit of the weight we are pulling right now -- if you all are so concerned about the Constitution and such!!!
WE ARE TRYING TO WIN AN ELECTION. AND, GUESS WHAT? IT IS HARD. AND IT ISN'T FUNNY.
If Hillary doesn't cut these "supporters dead -- she should lose any important Senate leadership positions.
If Lieberman speaks at the GOP Convention -- ditto.
This is getting ridiculous.
Can we PLEASE get our Democrat elected before we start to tear him apart?
Hmmmm?
Remember that the alternative is McCain?
My God, I was wondering how long it would take before Obama would start being ripped apart by his own side -- but it has already started.
Has it occurred to any of you that one important reasons the US public prefers Republican presidents is so it won't have to deal with all the complaining and bitching and moaning from the RIGHT -- and the LEFT -- that they have to deal with when they elect a Democrat?
At least, when they elect a Republican, they only have to deal with yowling from the Left.
My God, we are pathetic.
First, a "nuclear Pakistan" is not a threat to the United States. Pakistani nukes can only used regionally (they are mostly designed to be used against India), not the US.
Second, we have already been making "unilateral" forays into Pakistan. Do you honestly think ANY US president would NOT make a move against Osama bin Laden if we had "actionable intelligence against him" and the Pakistanis said "no?" It is most likely that the Pakistanis would say "no" with their mouths while nodding "yes," with their heads. They depend upon us for millions of dollars of military and development aid.
For whatever reason, people have been acting as if Obama does not know what he is doing in this region: WRONG. He is the candidate who mentioned that negotiating with India is an important element in helping Pakistan be able to act more decisively on the Eastern Pakistani border. Obama is the candidate who is talking about working harder to give more international aid to Afghanistan to help combat the opium trade more aggressively. Obama is the candidate who can inspire and work with our NATO Allies to get more international troops to the region. Obama actually believes in "soft diplomacy" (that is help with schools and hospitals) and negotiation.
But, most of all -- and this is something that Juan Cole and Salon's readers need to be more confident about: Obama is the candidate who can walk and chew gum at the same time. Something that will be a GREAT CHANGE after the last 8 years!
I do grassroots work in VA. Why are the polls so close? A few thoughts:
Many of the new registrants are not being polled. We are registering new voters every day. Even if only 1/4th of them come to the polls -- this will be a significant number of voters that are not being counted -- in Polls. Though, I assume the campaign is keeping track of these numbers.
Young people. My 22 year old son, with his cell phone. All the high schoolers who will be 18 before November, all the Jr. College students...many of the most enthusiastic voters and volunteers are young people -- who are difficult to poll. The pollers and MSM keep counting these young people out. In this election, they will be making a mistake if they do.
Resistance from Democrats and Left-leaning Independents:
Racists. There are many people who simply will not vote for a Black man. Period. We lose a certain number of voters because of this. They look me in the eye and say "He's a Communist" but we both know what they mean.
Older Americans. There is resistance from older Americans. Whether it is because of Obama's age, his race, his "over-confidence" -- whatever, some older people are leery. Those who have good relationships with their children and grand-children are usually "on board," however.
Middle-aged white males. It is interesting when women come ask for materials to "show their husband." There are many divided households.
Hillary holdouts. There are some who are still angry -- though as McCain gets more and more aggressive -- and if he picks a more conservative running mate, most of these "will come home." All except the most angry. They, well, they are going to have to make whatever peace they can with themselves later -- especially if McCain is elected.
