@ pieceofcake

First, Senator Obama identifies himself as an African-American.

Second, he truly is an "African-American," as the child of an African father and American mother.

I suppose we could call him a Kenyan-American, but it is more common to use the term "Hispanic-American" than Colombian-American so it has precedence.

MSNBC chat

First: I do NOT think there is a racist bone in the Clinton's bodies or in the bodies of any of their supporters.

But, I have been watching the MSNBC coverage all morning -- I am stuck -- for family reasons in a hotel room all day...

It was interesting that when there were 2 black men and a Southern man, Scarborough -- who mostly drives me batty -- and Mika and Shuster chatting -- it was the 2 African-Americans and Southerner who talked about how racial code words were being used against Obama.

As someone who has lived in a Southern state more than 10 years, I am afraid that Mika and Shuster just didn't really "get it."

But, I believe that after these political pros discovered they could disconcert some non-black voters and get Obama "off message" -- with the help of the MSM -- they kept it up.

But, again, I think it is simply political opportunism. Not racism.

But, how would Clinton supporters like it if Obama mentioned that he couldn't wait to invite Bill Clinton to the White House to have a nice "cigar?" Or if Obama mentioned that he envied Hillary ability to forgive because it might make her the best person to negotiate peace treaties with all of our former enemies?

These might be valid issues to bring up because the GOP will likely bring them up in the General Election but that doesn't make them ethical in a Primary Election. There are good ways to win and there are bad ways to win.

First Kristol and now Hillary...

One more reason not to read the Times...don't worry -- of COURSE -- I'll vote for Hillary in the General Election.

But I won't start reading the Times on a regular basis again for quite a while -- if ever. It isn't that I don't agree with Kristol -- it is that he is willfully ignorant about many important issue I care about.

Perhaps we aren't just posting as an intellectual exercise. I, for one, wanted Glenn to know that another person out here felt strongly that he was wrong. And even inappropriate.

Monday, January 21, 2008 01:39 PM

Sorry Glenn, you are oh so wrong on this one...

Obama is obviously doing this to push back against the scurrilous rumors concerning his being a Muslim. Especially in SC, where the African-American population is extremely Christian. Add in the fact that this is the week of Martin Luther King's birthday...

So, Happy Martin Luther King Day to you Glenn. Our celebration of a deeply religious Christian Minister who changed the world.

(BTW - in general -- I don't like religion in politics -- but I understand the need in this situation.)

I don't care what color Thomas is...

He has no heart or soul...and is intellectually and morally dishonest.

That transcends race.

susan sunflower...

I can't hit the streets for Obama right now -- tho I have been giving money!

But, I agree with your sentiments and hope others will give what support they can!

Each one should work for the candidate they support -- and later on -- all Democrats will need to work hard to fight against the GOP. Heaven only knows what they will do to hold onto power.

Cheney's Haillburton stock went up 3000% last year. Yes, 3000%!!

OK, I'll try this one last time...re Reagan comment distortions

In the 70s, 80s and 90s, the Republican Party and conservative movement -- started a "new era." They mobilized the religious right, got the gift of Fox News and took over leadership of Congress. By 2002, Democrats were pretty depressed.

THAT IS WHAT OBAMA WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!!

Not about an admiration of Reagan or Republicans -- just of the way they "surged forward" and recovered after their Party's melt-down after Nixon's resignation in the late early 70s.

By the 80s, the country was also still traumatized after the schism in our country after Vietnam and the social changes between the 1950s and the 1970s.

They were ready for a change -- A BIG CHANGE. I believe they made the wrong choice -- I was at Berkeley and drank CHEAP red wine into oblivion that night.

But THAT is what Obama is talking about. Not any kind of admiration for Reagan's policies.

LOOK HILLARY PEOPLE. TELL US THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT YOUR CANDIDATE. DON'T TEAR DOWN OURS OR, WORSE, SPREAD DISTORTIONS ABOUT THE THINGS HE SAYS.

Then, we can have a nice, clean primary and be happy with our results.

[Recently, in the 00s, slowly, behind the scenes and more and more publicly, the Democratic establishment started to "get it together" and started investing REAL money and effort into re-building the Democratic Party and progressive movement to compete with the ascendant GOP and conservative movement.

Soros is the biggest name I can mention (one of the biggest money groups -- millions and millions of dollars for Dem and liberal groups -- likes to stay completely anonymous), MoveOn, and the DNC started raising and spending historically high amounts of money to build up a "NEW" political infrastructure that included diverse grassroots organizations, think tanks, media watch groups like Media Matters, and also essentially rebuilt the DNC -- including a new building and a huge new data base that allowed us to start competing with the RNC in Get Out the Vote activities.

Those changes plus anti-war sentiment, liberal publications, progressive radio, blogs and internet sites like Daily Kos created a new dynamism that the party and movement hadn't seen for a long time -- maybe not since the days of JFK and RFK.

All of our candidates can be part of this exciting new era.]

Sorry, no you didn't tell them "explicitly" to "bug-off."

But in your most recent email you called them:

"...childish and ultimately self-defeating." And,"...immature, irresponsible and self-absorbed."

Yes, that will draw them into the Hillary camp after the Primaries! That's the ticket!
