[Read the article: The readers strike back]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have never posted to a Salon article before, but I had to do it this time. When you first started posting reader letters I was intrigued and entertained. Then, as Gary Kamiya puts it, the "knaves, blowhards, nuts" etc started posting and what at first was fun turned ugly fast. I was delighted by the "only editor's choices" filter so I didn't have to slog through all the mud. But I'd be happier to see even more discernment over the posts. Freedom of expression is a great thing in theory, but it can get abused quickly. As a longtime reader and subscriber, I'm all for only having "editor's choices" and squelching the bile producers.
Good luck with whatever reforms you make.

Get Rid of Anonymous
[Read the article: Who are you, Anonymous?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Dear Joan,
I'm delighted that Salon requires letter writers to register and that you let editors delete the nasty letters. They are annoying and add nothing to the depth of the discussion. If Anonymous postings are falling into the vitriolic vein, get rid of them too. Anything you can do to keep the reader forum strong and focused makes the experience of it more enjoyable.
I've noticed Salon has become much newsier since you've taken the helm, and the navigation of it has become streamlined. I have appreciated both these changes. You are doing a great job.
