Farhad says: "True. But of course that ruins your songs -- burning to MP3s and then ripping back to iTunes decompresses and then recompresses the music, introducing digital artifacts into music."
This is only true if you rip the CD back into MP3. With a standard audio CD (which you can burn from iTunes) and the right software, you could rip the tracks to lossless FLAC files and add no additional compression. Or you could rip to a much higher bitrate MP3 to lesson the compression and potential file degradation. I've done this and haven't noticed any loss of sound quality. It's not a perfect solution, but it works.
Given the incredibly small size of these cars, I'm surprised they're not cheaper. Both the Toyota Yaris and the Chevy Aveo have better starting prices... and those cars come with back seats!
I heard the pundits on CNN talking about this last night, and I can already see some media group-think at work here.
Let me guess, soon you'll be saying:
A VOTE FOR EDWARDS IS A VOTE FOR CLINTON.
Whatever. The fact is you have no idea where Edwards votes would have gone. Any speculation is just that, speculation. And frankly I don't care.
Obama needs to EARN his votes just like everyone else.
That was a classy response by Edwards to what will ultimately be a meaningless endorsement. Nobody cares about Kerry in SC. If he wanted to have an impact, he should have endorsed Obama before New Hampshire.
Please. The only thing missing has been the media's attention span. This was a typical John Edwards speech... classy, passionate and on message.
I'm not a fan of Romney, but I thought he did better than McCain in this debate. I don't think he looked frustrated... he had to look down at his list repeatedly because there were a lot of random charges that McCain had thrown out, and he wanted to make sure he responded to all of them.
When McCain attacks Romney, he seems to enjoy it a little too much. I understand that he and Romney don't like each other, but he doesn't come off as very presidential when he's on the attack. He looks petty.
If the check comes before April 15th, I'm using it to pay this year's tax bill. Otherwise I will probably put it in a high interest savings account.
I would argue that both companies are the losers in this one. Sure, blu-ray may have won this particular war, but at what cost? How much money has Sony dumped into the PS3, selling it at a loss just to prop up the format? How much money has Sony (and the entire movie industry) lost in the last two years, as everyone in the general public stood on the sidelines waiting to see who would win? I don't know the answer, but the numbers have to be enormous.
I think Blu-ray will ultimately be successful, but to what degree I'm not sure. These last two (essentially wasted) years have not helped. Sure, the competition with HD-DVD may have brought prices down, but you know what brings down prices even further: consumer demand. I'm still waiting to see that emerge.
I recently bought some Sylvania CFLs that were labeled as "soft white" and I'm really happy with the color, which is pretty close to incandescents. In general, you want to look for bulbs labeled soft white, as opposed to natural light or daylight (which will be bluer).
I just wanted to thank you for running this article with that ridiculous photo composite. Seriously, is that supposed to be funny? It's not funny. It's embarrassing. That, combined with the equally idiotic title, was more than enough to convince me NOT TO READ THIS ARTICLE AT ALL.
Instead, I just skipped to the comments and enjoyed everyone's trashing of it.
No complaints from me, but I second the suggestion for a hierarchical, threaded layout. I think that would make the comment sections much easier to read, especially for articles and blogs that get a lot of responses.
Radiohead could afford to do this since they actually sell albums. NIN hasn't been relevant, much less successful, since the mid-nineties.
Um, I'm not sure what planet you're living on, but NIN last two albums (released in 05 and 07) sold quite well. I believe they both went GOLD, which is about the same as what Radiohead's last couple of albums sold.
You can argue relevancy if you want, but at least get your facts straight.
I wouldn't be reading SALON!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And yeah, the acronyms really suck.
I really liked the use of the Faulkner quote. Totally appropriate in the context of the speech... Faulkner being a Southern writer from Mississippi who dealt with the undertones of race in his writings.
I believe that was from the Sound & the Fury, but I'm not sure.
Great speech.
The CBS Coverage has been okay, but honestly, I've watched more games on my computer screen this year than on the television. CBS didn't show the Marquette/Stanford game in my market (Chicago) until well into the second half, so I watched that one on my computer. And on Thursday and Friday I kept tabs on a few games while I was at work! So kudos to CBS for that.
I've never once clicked on one one of Google's "sponsored links" and, in particular, the ones on the right side of the screen I barely even notice. So this will no effect on me, but if Google can sucker companies into giving them more money for the advertising, I say all the power to them.
That was a nice bit of analysis, Andrew. Salon has been getting a lot of flak lately by letter writers who (justifiably) see a Clinton bias disguised as neutrality. This post is a good example of how to actually write a balanced article.
