Can't believe this wonderful film is only now making it to the US
[Read the article: "Army of Shadows"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Thanks to Stephanie for drawing attention on that masterpiece. Whatever the initial reception in France was, this beautiful, darkly heartening movie has been considered by French critics and the general public here as a superb work of art for decades now (it is regularly shown on French prime time TV). Indeed it is strangely resonating now, but this portrayal of human resilience and fortitude in the darkest of times has been haunting me ever since I saw it as a teenager 25 years ago, not in a small part because of Simonne Signoret's superb acting. Her last scene you won't easily forget.

What a kick-off for the week
[Read the article: "Jesus didn't smoke no weeds!"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hurrah for Debra for offering us that piece. Made me laugh so much. Quintessential Salon.
Yep, and I love the Courtney Love piece too! And, Heather Havrilesky, please come back to us quickly!
What's gone wrong with letter writers lately anyway? What a sad, bitter, self-centered and stupid bunch. Get a sense of humour, guys.
Come on, given the editorial content (keep up the good work!), Salon must have a majority of intelligent readers with a sense of humour. Speak up!

Heather, YOU rule!
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Welcome back, I missed you!

Spot on Heather!
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"analysts and traders stare at numbers and charts all day long and try to predict how the numbers will react to other people's reactions to random data like the weather and the terror alert level and the type of pasta served at TomKat's Italian castle wedding extravaganza"
Haven't read anything so funny AND accurate at the same time in a while!! Ex-trader talking who saw the amount of BS up close.

What's with the green type?
[Read the article: How to be an asparagus superhero]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What a lovely article.. made me crave asparagus right here and now! However I would go for the white variety, far more popular here in France, in all its fleshy gloriousness. When it's really fresh, so much more to rejoice upon! Hate the pee smell though...

LarryK
[Read the article: Fathers get no respect]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]GK's article is great but your 2 posts make it even more enjoyable.
Salon: bring LarryK on the team! I could read more of the adventures of these drones and their cohorts every week. Priceless.

Actually...
[Read the article: Beyond the Multiplex]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Since "traduction" is feminine in French, the correction should stand as "traduction française". Sorry Andrew, it's true we are about as picky as the Americans :o)
And while we're at it, "This movie's in French, but the setting has not been transposed or anything". Oh please, Hollywood has produced gazillions of movies in English set about anywhere in the world with hardly anyone being ever concerned about that. Give me a break....

Here's one positive letter
[Read the article: If we leave Iraq, do we lose for good?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I must differ with the onslaught of hate letters posted here today. Having found Paglia way off the rails often in the past (although consistently challenging and entertaining, which is a good reason why Salon should keep her), I've found this time her answers to the letters (even those hysterical ones) sharp, sensible and amusing.
Good work Camille!

Really REALLY bad idea
[Read the article: Goodbye to Audiofile]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Fewer pop-culture items and more techno-babble from the likes of Farhad Manjoo who shot himself in the foot with his ridiculous article about the return of his iPhone.... I've never been one to blame the evolution of Salon - on the contrary I was often thrilled and challenged, but I wonder where you're headed with a decision like this one? Do we really need more TV and more politics on Salon??

I still go to the movies...
[Read the article: Beyond the Multiplex]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]... if less often, and the latter is for 2 reasons: lack of time ( I travel a lot for work) and lots of great TV series to watch instead, some of them being consistently more challenging and imaginative than movies.
However the experience of big screen w/ room full of people is unmissable for a lot of films.
It also helps that in France (and some neighboring countries like Belgium) a couple of big distributors are selling "unlimited" cards for which you pay roughly USD 25 a month and get to see as many films as you want in their numerous top-quality theaters.
Oops... I figure the health system isn't the only advantage we have over you guys ;o)
Great post Mr O'Hehir, your review of Goya's Ghost has made my day!

Make light fun of it
[Read the article: My boyfriend is checking out chicks while I'm standing right there!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Come on, you cant stop guys from looking at chicks - or other guys if they're so inclined! He just needs to understand that he's hurting you to a degree, so that he refrains from doing it too much, but you also have to realize that there is no danger there. It's just the most natural thing, and it does not mean that he wants to be with these women (or guys)! He's with you, you're in love, you have a great relationship, what more do you want?
My way of handling this: I ask mockingly (but nicely): " do you need my eyes?", as in " you are staring so intently you might need a second pair of eyes". That shows your point without making too much of a deal of it - which it doesn't deserve. You're letting him know you are aware of what he's doing but you're also making him light fun of him. He will feel embarrassed but not to the point where he resents your remark.

Oh please mcsnee...
[Read the article: "No Country for Old Men"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]And why should the reviewer be neutral about the source material anyway?
In this case Ms Zacharek's view of Cormac McCarthy's prose (rather funny in an illuminative sort of way) comes right at the end of her review. Her whole angle is focusing on the treatment of the story by the Coen brothers.
I for one has found this review rewell documented and interesting. It's this kind of slightly negative but constructive review that makes you want to see the film anyway.

Thanks Bob
[Read the article: Remembering Bob Watts]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]He was obviously such a gifted and wonderful human being. It feels awkward, having loved the art at Salon for so long to discover one of the key people behind it after his passing.
Thank you Salon too for this moving tribute - as always with the best of Salon, it shows the light.
Fred
