Original article: A floor of one's own

Don't Men Need Hair Dryers?

I don't think I've stayed in a hotel room without a hair dryer, ever. Even the cheap ones.

While it does sound a bit odd that the ladies get robes and magnifying mirrors while the men get butlers and luxury lounges, I know a few women who would enjoy the women's floor. It's hard to compare the two options side by side, a King Suite is likely a much more expensive option than the girly room, and since no one is forcing lone women travelers to stay there while barring them from the King floor, it's hard to call it sexist outside of the unfortunate name choice. (unless maybe they're talking about the size of the beds on that floor?)

I dunno. If my mom was traveling alone, I can't say I wouldn't encourage her to stay on a women only floor if it were an option, with or without beauty accoutrements from Victoria's Secret.

Dear, Dear Salon Readers

My GOD I have never read so much right wing tripe coming from the mouths of supposed liberals.

I was a special education teacher in a very poor inner city school for eight years. I worked with amazing, wonderful teachers who care, who know their stuff and who have high expectations for every single student.

To all of you who are so quick to denigrate teachers - from just implying we're too stupid to get a better degree to outright calling us illiterate - W. T. F. ? I thought this group was supposed to be too smart to fall for a Limbaugh-esque smear campaign, I guess I was wrong.

Teachers, the people who choose to teach children, are less respected by the readers of this magazine than prostitutes. Wow.

Salon used to be my happy place on the web, where I could count on intelligent, thoughtful discussions about a wide variety of topics. It's the one place where I thought those of us that value education enough to DEVOTE OUR CAREERS TO IT, might be seen as something other than a parasite trying to f*** your sons on a pile of your tax dollars.

Everwood

Everwood also did a very sensitive episode about abortion. A young girl (not a series regular, natch) found herself "in trouble" and went to Dr. Brown, who ended up not doing the procedure. The ultra-conservative town doctor ended up providing the abortion, like his father had done for years; quietly and whenever it was needed. I was solidly surprised by how well done it was.

I think this blog is a great idea, although I was glad to see the author doesn't have a comments section. I heard a phrase recently - "If you want to lose all faith in humanity, read any online comments section." I think she was smart to prevent "discourse" from the angry masses.

Many good thoughts going the brave blogger's way in this difficult time.

Me Too

I'm a professional woman, with generally adult interests and pastimes, but I love this show to pieces. I actually put the premiere in my planner. Leighton is a firecracker, and every scene she's in is electric. I have a totally skeevy crush on her castmate Ed Westwick, too. I wrote GG off as Spellingesque soapy fluff until I watched a few episodes, now I have a Tivo season pass for it.

Tacky

Firstly, Photoshopping is about as mature an act as sticking gum in the republican's hair. Secondly, really? At Salon?

It doesn't matter who wins, we're fucked.

Funny Article

Personally I find R. Ray to be a bit of a real life Cabbage Patch Kid. I wouldn't expect hard hitting journalism from her, but I think the article was funny and entertaining.

Looky at all the new conservative letter writers.... Welcome to Salon, let's all try and play with a modicum of civility, shall we?

Bwah!

I would totally play Dance Dance Ron Paul Revolution.

Watching product placement advertising in general is pretty entertaining to a geek like myself - and I've seen it pop up in games for a few years. I think it's a pretty modern move on Obama's part, and I agree it's not something that I would think the McCain camp would do.

I never cease to be shocked at how much money candidates spend on advertising in both parties. I know it's necessary, but holy crap.

Original article: Turning Indiana blue

Indiana is more than gravy.

Never in my lifetime has my state voted for a Democrat for president. I would be tickled pink to see Obama win Indiana. What it means on the national stage is less important to me than what it means to my state itself.

I live in one of the other doughnut counties, most folks in Hamilton county think people from my county are hillbillies. Interestingly enough, we hillbillies are moving closer and closer to voting for Obama. Neighbors who I would NEVER have thought would vote blue are planning to do so. My parents, both dyed in the wool conservatives, are voting for Obama.

McCain will take Hamilton County - home of the group that wanted to run Victoria's Secret out of town for encouraging teenage sex with their racy underpants - but I think Obama might win in counties that are more representative of Indiana as a whole.

I was also in the income bracket that would raise my taxes under Obama - until the tech company I worked for fired half of it's employees. Like Mr. Man in the article, I would have voted Obama anyway. Being jobless in the middle of the worst financial crisis since the 20's just reinforces my passion to get him elected. Hopefully my fellow unemployed Hoosiers feel the same.
