Our cat Moonshadow is a constant source of pleasure to us and a steady source of income for our wonderful local vet. Moonshadow is blind and lame from being hit by a car, and has urinary tract issues and food allergies. We can afford to pay the vet bills, but still find ourselves wondering at times what our limit is or should be. The way I look at it is that Moonshadow brings love and happiness to my life every day, and that's worth as much or more to me than pleasures such as vacations and restaurants and concerts. But if you can't afford it, I don't think you should feel guilty about not spending money for expensive veterinary procedures.
I was born and raised near Palmer (in the beautiful Matanuska Valley!), where my father was the principal of a local elementary school and my mother was a missionary on staff of the Lazy Mountain Children's Home. To use a Biblical phrase, I was raised "in the bosom" of fundamentalist Christianity. Those were pre-Falwell days, though, and the Christians I knew weren't particularly entangled in right-wing politics. I'm sad to hear how things have changed in the Valley, but I'm glad to know there are people like Howard Bess who are willing to speak out. It looks like it'll be a long time, though, before this Lesbian atheist will truly be able to go home again.
I've been waiting for someone to make the link between Prop 13 and our current mess. Thanks.
