  • WOW! I actually agree with Rambling Rose 22

[Read the article: What role did race play with white Democrats?]

One item that could use a little more discussion is the notion that white, blue-collar, working class doesn't mean the same thing as it did 20, 30, 40 years ago. That voter has changed considerably. Tell the guy making over $100,000 in overtime on the assembly line at GM, who owns a nice suburban home, has a boat, maybe an RV, or a snowmobile, a few cars, takes vacations all over the world, and has kids ready for college that he is an uneducated chump! Hew probably doesn't see Barack Obama OR John McCain as "sharing his values." He's worried about his pension, job and retirement security, and keeping what he's worked for all these years.

I am in agreement with you on this one, Rose. I was reading a story the other day that pissed me off: Garbage collectors make a starting salary of $60,000 in this city. That's way more than my post-graduate educated self makes by far (and I've been in the job market post-college for at least 10 years). Not that I begrudge garbage collectors--they deserve every cent. My working class parents (stepdad worked for Chicago Transit Authority for 40 years and my mom is a nurse) and they both continue to make more than me (and other similarly educated friends). Most people in my family have blue-collar jobs and they all do quite alright financially.

This is why I think the insult that Obama and his supporters have oft been accused of being "elitist" or a "latte liberal" or an "egghead" has way more to do with our American way of denigrating education. After all, the jock almost always wins out...

I said "more" qualified, not "qualified". Neither of them has a good answer for how to get out of Iraq, but McCain has decades of experience supporting soldiers and a complete undertanding of how the military works. Obama has... good intentions.

First, the only people who say the military should be in charge of the decision-making for ending a failing occupation must watch "Stargate." But, wait, I watch "Stargate" and I think someone, as you assert, with a military mindset in charge of troop withdrawal is questionable.

Second, I thought McCain (too hot) had a wildly different plan for troop withdrawal than Obama (too cold). I'm guessing (though, I guess I could be wrong), that you think Clinton's plan is just right? Whose plan is closer to Clinton's: McCain's or Obama's?

But I find it extremely condescending and that men and women who support Obama call women who don't want to support him all sort of variations of "dumb" or "crazy"--i.e. irrational, self-destructive, IQ below 40, emotions clouding their judgment, needing to calm down, etc.

I wouldn't call you crazy--just hypocritical. And not just the women. The men, too.

    1) GM is closing 4 truck and SUV plants in North America and yet people on this site can indulge themselves by working up a lather about race

First, when you have to deal with racism every day in very tangible ways as I and other black people do, engaging about race is hardly indulgent. My white fiance still struggles with some of the things I have to deal with. When security was following me around a dept store this weekend, he worked himself into a later. But to me, it was old news and no reason to get worked up over. Also, I'm sure a great number of the GM closing affected all races of people.

    2) I've only got the memory of a gnat and I'm obviously racist because I'm a white woman, but I can't remember when he last won a primary.

He just won North Carolina last month. And I love it how people put words into Obama supporters mouths. I wouldn't say you were a racist just cause you're white.

  • Indigo, you are a nasty piece of work

You need to quit it with the anti-black rhetoric. It makes you look stupid (and racist).

And really, what if Barack Obama IS the affirmative action candidate? Affirmative action is about making the playing field level for EQUALLY OR MORE QUALIFIED candidates. Go learn your terms before slinging them out to insult.

You are a poor example of a Hillary Clinton supporter. Do you really think she'd agree with all the B.S. you're spouting off? I think not--at least Hillary is a true progressive.

  • Thank GOD

I don't judge Hillary by her supporters. Then I might truly hate her.

The haters are out in full force today.

  • indigo, I have nothing to prove to you

I know what affirmative action is since I have a degree in critical race theory. I have a better understanding of it than someone like you who needs to Google it.

You are anti-black. And, please, try to refrain from being so nasty.

But I can only hold back so long when confronted with blatant bigotry.

And yes, Hillary was impressive last night. At least for most of her speech. She always loses me with her maneuvering.

Generally, I am always pleasantly surprised by Hillary.

I hope Obama and Clinton can kiss and make up.

  • Thanks, Ricardo

    I won't.

    I shudder as well.
