Not a popular view

but you can't change the boys who did this. I don't believe you can change sexual predators. 15, 19, whatever. They should be put away for life.

Broadsheet

Where it's always August, 1971.

Thank God

Somebody with some literary clout finally nailed Vidal. He is a maniac. If Vidal wants to make a case for McVeigh's heroism, he should stop spouting it on the talk shows, and go make it to the families of the dead in Oklahoma City.

A third-rate mind, a tepid writer -- ocasionally an amusing old bitch.

Wow

Sirota knows as little about movies as he does about politics.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 04:19 PM

@purialu

Yes. This is exactly the kind of situation where a lawsuit can shake an industry into changes. She's has, I'd think, an excellent civil suit. It's too bad some smart DA can't find some way of charging the hotel with reckless endangerment.

Must Hollywood dads be so clueless?

I don't know. You'd have to actually consider a Hollywood movie. This film is from Australia. Reporting, anyone?

Mag's now as dirty a pit as any other, mascarading as something sweeter.

Um, no. It's the most restrained skin mag. No open vaginas. No penises, hard or otherwise. No depiction -- simulated or real -- of sex. That is simply and utterly and provably false.

@ Frybread

A judge isn't bound to a plea deal. However, if he rejects it, he has to be motivated by something other than his concern over his public image. The doc. this piece so routinely dismisses deals with that. And wouldn't it be nice if the journalist had dealt with this issue.

Monday, September 28, 2009 02:06 PM

As a piece of journalism

this is a disgrace. It doesn't begin to deal with the facts of how a corrupt judge reneged on a plea deal everyone involved wanted. Unless, Harding contends the victim's wishes didn't matter. Isn't this how this whole thing started in the first place?

I have no idea

Then learn to read, Tiny Balls, or have someone translate it into moron for you.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 11:54 AM

I have

a feeling the writer of this article is by now used to the idiocy that inevitably results when you allow the public to post whatever they want without anyone editing or overseeing.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 07:07 AM

Of course

she's not the face of women who abort. But it's hardly challenging her legal right to act like a selfish, irresponsible ass to point out that she is one. If part of the reason for being pro-choice is concern for women's health, then you have to be alarmed at someone who is so careless she undergoes an invasive surgical procedure 15 times.

"Why do you get to be the arbiter of all that is tasteful and intelligent?"

Um, because everyone else is so stupid.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 04:13 PM

When exactly

did people get so stupid?

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 08:27 AM

Oh

Grow up.

And how sad that black man chose to endorse censorship rather than use the moment to teach his son that, guess what, books and movies and plays aren't all about presenting the right messages or the correct perspective and sometimes you have to do the work of sorting through them.

So much easier just to say that shouldn't show it any more.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 06:56 AM

If there were a God

we'd be spared the opinions of idiot ideologues. GWTW made you sick? Really? Grow up.

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 08:44 AM
Original article: Tyra Banks takes it all off

My God, this is puritanical

Are black women to be judged as betraying the race if they use any embellishment? Does a bottle of conditioner in the shower mean you secretly want to be white? For crissakes.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009 08:18 AM

Point taken

Protesting this asshole gives him more publicity. Let him have his ride. All pop cult fiction writers flame out (Tama Janowitz, anyone?) and he, too, will fade away. But if he's bragging about getting girls drunk so he can have sex with them, then the language of the protests is not simply rhetoric but a precise description of what he's doing: Promoting a rape culture.

Friday, September 4, 2009 01:24 PM

@ramesees

It's nicer than saying "a pair of the mouthbreathers you'd find in Southie (in Boston) or in some of the far reaches of the boroughs (in NYC)."

Just sayin'.

Friday, August 28, 2009 12:25 PM

I hope

the boycott urge expressed in this thread gains ground. Keep those lines jammed!

Friday, August 28, 2009 08:30 AM

@phil gisto

Apparently, the shack she was in was soundproofed. So, you're quite right that it's ridiculous for people to say they heard no screaming. But I think there's a lot of questions to be asked of the cops and parole officers.

But listening to the cops talk about how well hidden this shack was didn't cut it for me. What exactly was that parole officer doing during all those visits?

Unless the shack was underground, how hard was it to detect?

When someone writes

that all lives, not just American, should be valued, he or she means American lives should be valued less. In that scenario, American lives are expected payment for real or alleged American sins elsewhere. So those kids from Syracuse? They're blowback. I won't even discuss the more paranoid rantings in this thread. The son of a bitch was convicted. He wasn't sentenced to death. He should have served out his sentence. Want to show him compassion? Give him medical care appropriate to the end of life.

Do your research

Vivid, the largest porn company, requires condoms.

@Lev Raphael

Do you ever get tired of opening your pie hole to bitch about movies you haven't seen yet?

If you want to complain about somebody's opinion, get off your ass and see the thing first.

Wonderful to see

tolerance and diversity of opinion honored as usual by the ayatollahs who post in letters.

It should be noted

that Hillary graciously shook the kid's hand on her way out -- presumably after being told of the translator's mistake.

I agree that the response to her response is sexist. But let's hope Broadsheet says so when -- inevitably -- Maureen Dowd uses it to bash Hillary again. Just as she used Bill's trip to N. Korea to bash her.

Friday, August 7, 2009 07:18 AM
Original article: "Julie & Julia"

Who can't read Pt II

The reviewer is referring to a scene -- one scene -- where Child is sad because her sister gets pregnant. She wasn't putting blame on her, and the movie isn't involved in some family-values conspiracy. Take a pill, for crissakes.
