Scandinavia

Why do Scandinavian countries do better?

For one thing there is less corruption. A big corelation exists between countries that do well and the level of corruption, regardless of the kind of government runs the place. Part of that has to do with the relative difference in society. A person is more likely to be corrupt if he believes that those above him are doing really a whole lot better, as opposed to just a little better. The US rates with Chile in world perception of corruption, tied for 20th, if I recall.

Another thing is, I really do believe we all do better when we all do better. In a society where incomes levels are more equal, the less well off still have money and can spend it on things other than basic neccessities, and I believe this powers the economy much better than having a large uber-rich class. As a thought experiment, imagine a village of 1000 with 1 billionaire, and 999 with nothing vs, another village with 1000 millionaires. Which would have the better overall economy? Why do you think that?

I also believe that a certain amount of socialism works. In Norway, I was told that the oil belongs to the people and the oil companies, like StatOil, are paid to mine and refine it, but the bulk of the profits goes to the people. If the price of oil is $20/bbl, the people get less benefit than if it is $80/bbl. You think the American economy would be in such bad shape, you think the dollar would be plunging if most of ExxonMobile/ ConnocoPhillips/ Standard Oil's profits went to the American citizen instead of the CEO and other upper management and the other uber-rich?

There are also benefits to society with socialized healthcare and a very large safety net for society, as well as free education at a high level of quality.

A homogeneous, low crime, less incarcertated society helps a lot, too. But perhaps paying a living wage to all, as well as time off for families so the kids are less likely to grow up being punks has something to do with the low crime part of it.

Original article: The godawful GOP debate

Winning in Iraq

A couple of the boobs on stage mentioned staying until we achieve victory.

It would seem to me that any kind of journalist might have ask for a definition of victory.

Fear rules

Fear is the GOP Stock in trade. They cultivate it the way Afghans cultivate opium. Playing to it is the one thing the GOP does better than anyone.

Problem is, in America, it works. And it really works well.

FACTS?

Since when are facts a concern to the GOP?

Lies and fearmongering is the GOP's stock in trade. And NOBODY does fear and lies better.

Original article: Don't ignore Shtup-gate!

MSM does not care

Sure, they SHOULD care about corruption of a POTUS Candidate, but you KNOW they don't IF that person is GOP.

Pure Apathy. They print non-stories about Obama's "Muslim connection" instead.

To Dan Gilmore

Time respects its audience: Right wing demagogues who don't care about truth.

And Time DOES stand for something: Right wing demagogues who don't care about truth.

YOU just don't understand about modern media.

Control the media, and you control the public.

Double-plus good!

Props for Malkin

As much as I have dispised MANY of her "opinions", she deserves credit, whatever her underlying reasons, for the post she wrote.

Her credibility with me has risen an INFINITE amount, on a scale of 0 to 100, from an absolute ZERO to almost one.

Bush sells fear

Fear, fear, fear.

MAYBE Iran will start their program again, so FEAR.

Neocons are the most cowardly group I have ever seen.

It is why they NEED their guns and military.

Party of Personal Responsibility

What a crock.

The article does not mention DuMond's priors, which are pretty horrendous in itself.

Nor does the article mention Huck's congratulatory letter to DuMond after the release.

Another worthless lying "Christian".

HUGH HEWITT??? HUGH HEWITT??

Anybody who bothers to waste time listening to Hugh Hewitt is not to be taken seriously.

Reading the National Enquirer is a better innvestment of time than paying attention to Hugh Hewitt.

I don't trust Romney

I don't trust him because he doesn't know any poor people.

He doesn't even know any middle class people.

He doesn't even know anyone who is only moderately rich.

Anyone who thinks being on a political campaign for dad is the same as fighting a war with real bullets and real explosives does not deserve to be taken seriously for ANYTHING.

ExxonMobil

Pays 13% taxes on its profits.

Watch the Faux News watching trailer trash jump to the defense of the ultra-rich.

To Huck:

When they get sick, the rich and the poor already are treated the same. They each get the healthcare they can pay for. Each pays their own money until they are bankrupt, then the government might step into help, if the patient is still alive. How Christian is that?

And it is the same for education. They each get what they can pay for. End of story.

Thanks. That is so fair and Christian of you.

Romney: True Neo-con

Romney spent $20 mil (or whatever) of his kids' money for nothing.

Original article: Stocks fall on bad job news

Thank goodness for Bush!

We have a REAL economy based on home ownership and trickle down economy.

Not at all like the phoney Clinton economy where they averaged only 240,000 jobs per month across the 96 month administration.

What we have now is MUCH better.

"I am scared to death if the Democrats get in"

Or maybe just scared to death. Period.

Amazing how a few thousand fanatics with primitive weapons has paralyzed those who call themselves part of "the greatest nation on earth".

TRUTH

There is no such thing as truth.

There are only facts, and points of view.

Sunday, January 6, 2008 08:55 PM

How about Exxon Mobil

Will they still pay 13% tax on their profits?

Will Haliburton still receive tax credits on their business losses? (Haliburton, being an off shore entity, books a LOT of its profits off shore, and a LOT of its losses in the USA. Thanks to Dick Cheney, ex-CEO and true American. Therefore, it operates at a loss every year and entitled to huge tax breaks. (I wish I could do this.)
