I am sorry this happened to you. What you describe is a devestating loss and a violation. There is not much I can say to your loss, or where you are mentally at this time.

In my experience in viewing the world, the second idea just works better. We really all do better when we all do better. "Me first" works well enough for a short time when society is relatively well off. We can see this over the last 60 years or so. But it did not work well in the Gilded Age, is not working well now, and will continue to degrade in the future. There are good arguments for the social contract and income re-distribution. One can google it for more complete discussions.
