A Darfur rally in Central Park is fine. But what about Darfur rallies in Johannesburg or Nairobi or Kampala? Not likely. The AU has a "force" in Darfur, which is commendable if not effective, but has done nothing diplomatically to pressure Khartoum to stop the genocide. Why is this? Respect for Khartoum's sovereignty? Worry about setting a precedent that might someday be applied elsewhere?
Africa's silence and passivity is a get-out-of-jail-free card for Khartoum. It insulates the regime against pressure from outsiders, particularly the "colonialists" demanding action in the Security Coucnil. It allows Russia and China to drag their feet. Sure, Arab governments' outright support for Khartoum is far worse, but Africa's passivity is decisive.
If you want blue helmets in Darfur, get the AU to demand it, really demand it. That's the only way it will happen.
Privacy? When did social conservatives convert to the belief that sex and family matters should not be intrusively surveilled and regulated? Just yesterday? Or just in this one case?
The real issue is not the Palin's sorry family story. The issue is how McCain makes big personnel decisions. Now we know.
