Someone was asking why this show was rural -- well look at the red vs blue states and the rural vs urban areas and who has the highest pregnancy rates?
Religion is a strong correlation to high murder rates, high domestic abuse rates, high divorce rates, high teen pregnancy - red and rural is a recipe for teen pregnancy. There are no abortion providers in these areas, and if Planned Parenthood is not there, odds are they are no cheap access to birthcontrol - and they are also the least likely to have health insurance - which means the babies they do have , will not have the best care.
Liberal attitudes, actual sex education, education period, money and access to health care tends to lead to fewer teenagers getting pregnant in the first place.
The article here on broadsheet is not interesting. I want to know why social scientist think Promiscuous men are more likely to rape, and I'd like to know their definition of promiscuous men.
Also if they are promiscuous, doesn't that argue they are getting lots of sex? So why rape, is there an attitude toward women? Is the rape just of women, but also of other men? Are there warning signs? What is their motivation. Damn this sounds like an interesting report, can we get a write up of it?
Except the science that came out of the space program has probably saved the life of someone you know -- the sheer mass of research to create a life support system in space, as spun off the economic wonder that was the US in the 60's, and 70's -- without the space program alot of what you take for granted today wouldn't exist, from medicinal to communications, and navigation.
The space program was/is cheap a fractions of any of our wars of choice. If it was cut 100% tomorrow you wouldn't even notice it with our budget issues, cheaper than most military programs by a geometric factor. But you would notice the progress of science slowing down, since the money would no longer be feeding raw research, something commercial entities don't do. We are already a 2nd class country K-12 education wise, these will make it worse, with no easy to identify science program to hold up to kids.
Saving this money won't feed one more person, cloth one more person, or educate one, since the money for the space program is in the military budget, and will just be used to buy a weapon system instead of fundamental research which might have lead to a new medical treatment that saves lives, or like the photos from orbit that save life's by predicting the weather and mapping hurricanes, or watching the changes caused by global warning - who wants a heads up? Just whose budget do think that kind of work comes from? Or how the satellites get into orbit in the first place... the writer of this article is a moron, who doesn't know anything about how our modern phone system (satellites) or many of our everyday house hold items come from research originally done by the space program.
@Anna68 - when I was young and helping friends in a band to the clubs in town, I wore a ring, now true even that didn't always help, but these places had bouncers. Was there promoting, and working - not to be hit on.
Now I am older and have the real thing, and my husband is great.
But the fake ring when I was twenty something was a life saver.
Life was full, and I didn't have time for pickup artist.
The only other option in some of these countries is to die -- ie if the woman is unmarried and found out to be pregnant she might be killed by her embarrassed family. (Lots of African/Mid East migration populations in some of these European countries)
The only other option is to be force to have a kid, which has a higher risk of death than an abortion.
Like the underground movement that saved slaves, this is a movement to save women. You and your ambivalence is part of the problem. If you believe women are free , and governments shouldn't control their bodies and reproductive choices - then what is the problem? It is safer than their other choices.
When a government becomes more conservative, the first thing it is willing to give up is women's rights.
