@LibTex and LeCastor

During WWII, my undergraduate college had military training, and many of my female professors (in languages) were in OSS. I think it's a good idea. In 1977, when I was faculty and my students were afraid of being sent to Iran, I investigated a direct commission because there was no way those kids should have been left out on their own without me.

We've got a problem here within the feminist ideologies. Note the plural. It goes back to First Wave, with Rankin voting against entry into WWI. Second Wave is pretty much contemporaneous with the War and Anti-War in Vietnam. So you've got strong pacifist and anti-military sentiment there. I think feminism needs to address the role of the military within feminism. I know a few who do it superbly, like Ginmar; I know a few serving officers and enlisted who would be a credit to -any- cause, and are a credit to the U.S. But we've got a house divided here and need to achieve some sort of consensus.

BS, ever hear of Josie Natori? She left an investment banking career and founded a high-end lingerie line. She's not the only one. But if you knew much about ladies' lingerie, I think I'd think you were even weirder.

Just earning a living

I suppose you're consistent, if consistent hatred and irrationality are consistent.

The women who are talking are women who want to earn a living.

As in "make money" so they can support themselves autonomously and not rip off noisemakers like you.

It has nothing to do with your penis. Or anyone else's. It has to do with earning a living and being self-sufficient -- and getting a fair crack at using one's abilities to the fullest.

You've been pissing and moaning about how women want men's money, etc. etc. etc. Here are women who want their -own- money, and now powerless little ol' you wants to throw them out of business, too.

Man, do you just sit there and eat those mushrooms? How on earth can you support yourself with that sort of delusional thinking?

Don't look at the female professionals of the world to bail you out. You're a -bad- investment.

The Draft

I'd prefer we didn't have to have one. We don't.

I'd prefer people didn't have to register. But men do.

It should be equitable.

I found it, I found it!

No, I'm not talking about finding parts of certain trolls' anatomy. Why would I look?

But I found, from 2002, the Dinner That Was.

This is over the line and infinitely worth reading. Registration required.

Re Gloria Steinem

Why do you mention an "aged Gloria Steinem"?

Isn't it good that people are healthy and live to an older age?

@Eric Free

Steinem was a poor girl in Ohio (Toledo, I think) who was fortunate to get through Smith.

She's worked for everything she got.

Dworkin was a sex worker, if I remember correctly, for years, and I doubt she was the sort to attract Eliot Spitzer.

If Millett was a don, she was hardly wealthy.

The myth that Second Wave feminism is a product of upper-middle-class white women from good schools and is restricted to them is one that its opponents seem fond of.

@Durian Joe

Thank you. I didn't want to wake up and find it had all been a dream.

@Eric

Hard to believe that anyone would resent hard work or think that their ideology would negate it.

Congratulations: you've convinced me you believe that.

My life and my own hard work have convinced me it says more about you than it does about the women you're attempting to denigrate in a way that men like you call catty when women do it.

@Brightstar

As a reasonable feminist woman, when I need someone to interpret to me what I really think, you would be one of the last people I would choose.

@Controlling people

I studied behavioral psych in college.

Brightstar, when it comes to making you jump, you're a slam dunk.

All anyone has to do is post, and you have a hissy.

What's more, it's an overgeneralized and venomous hissy.

Behavioral psych

No, they taught me to count bar presses.

Three bar-presses for one stimulus. Brightstar is a GOOD subject.

They also taught me to rely on hard data, not overgeneralizations or ideological agendas.

100-year curse?

As I see it, I can't lose. I live in New York, I'm a third-generation Red Sox fan, and I was born near Cleveland.

But I do think it would be cool if the Cubs won.

The world would probably end the second afterward, but still...

Thursday, April 3, 2008 08:59 PM

Say it ain't so!

Up until the end of the article, I was hoping you would say "April Fool!"

Since this apparently isn't a belated April Fool joke, I have just one thing to say.

Eeeeuwwwww.

@elmerbond

"I wonder if secular Jewish people would have the same struggles about sending their kids to a camp where they get a dose of the Torah."

That would depend. My parents sent me to Youth Group Camp. I very much wanted to go, and it was an honor to be nominated -to- go. Although it was more observant than I was used to, however, it was still Reform. If it had been Orthodox, I doubt they'd have sent me. For that matter, I doubt the Orthodox would have extended the invitation. And I don't think I'd have wanted to go.
