Running up the score -- Ha!
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Right. Bitter much?
Many on Fannation have called Coach Belichick classless by the way his Patriots keep running up the score on their opponents. I have been searching for answers all week for what Bill could have done differently. Finally, my answer came this morning. Kudos to Jim McCabe, sportswriter for the Boston Globe, who provided this historical view of this high scoring topic and how some of Football's most beloved greats have handled similar situations:
"Why couldn't Belichick have shown more class like:
- Joe Gibbs, whose 1991 Redskins went to the air late in the game and rubbed it in against the Falcons 56-17,
- Don Shula, whose 1972 Dolphins threw for two 4th quarter touchdowns in a 52-0 win over the Patriots.
- George Halas, the icon of icons to the helmet wearing crowd, and such a gentle, fair-minded, and dignified gent that he called for a double reverse to score his team's ninth touchdown, then faked the extra point and ran in for a 2-point conversion after the bear's 10th touchdown to cement a 73-0 squeaker over the Redskins in 1939.
- Coach Otto Graham and linebacker Sam Huff - beloved Hall of Famers, both of them - who were involved in the decision to kick a field goal with just seconds left to give their Redskins much-needed breathing room over the New York Giants 72-41.
- Lou Holtz, who in 1992 ordered a fake punt in the third quarter to give his team added space in a 54-7 win over Tom Coughlin's Boston College Eagles.
- And my all time favorite - The Immortal John Heisman, whose 1916 Georgia Tech club demolished Cumberland, 222-0, and so endeared himself to colleagues that they named college football's most prestigious award after him."
Hey, do you think if Coach Belichick scores 60 points against Indy, they will rename the Lombardi trophy the Belichick Trophy, or maybe change the Heisman to the Belichick?
Oh, and Jim McCabe was also kind enough to tell us fans here in Boston exactly what Joe Gibbs said to Coach Belichick at midfield on Sunday. Joe said to Bill " Now I regret that I only beat you, 42-17, when you were with the Browns in 1991."

They could always take a knee
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The Buffalonians and Washingtons could have just taken a knee and punted, every time. After all, the game is already over, right? Why risk injury to your players?
-
Actually, Lynx has one point in that

2003 and 2004
[Read the article: What's worse than watching your teams lose? Watching them win]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That's partly what made the first Series win so intense. It was really a two year ride. First 2003 and the failure in the 7th game in extra innings against the Yankees, then the whole next year wondering if they were gonna make it, then the comeback and finally the sweep. Too much to take.

Couldn't believe it when i heard it

[Read more letters about this article: Here]He tore a ligament three weeks ago and he's going to play? I strained a tendon behind my knee and I couldn't even put weight on it for a week. Granted, I'm not a well-conditioned pro athlete, but still, I think the risk is too great.
Which brings me to another, related point: Injuries are really hurting the level of play in the NFL. Beginning in training camp, you see players going down and sometimes out for the season, sometimes on the first day of practice. Dwight Freeney is out for the Colts. What fun is playing the Colts without having to worry about Dwight Freeney? Benson is out for the Bears, the Broncos might start a fifth-string fullback.
I know injuries are part of the game, but it seems like more (and more important players) are being lost to injury than ever. Or is it just that the snow was SOOOO much deeper when I was a kid?

What they said
[Read the article: Heigl didn't love "Knocked Up"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I just did a quick Google image search for Heigl. There's a whole lot a glam shots. Some very alluring semi-nudes. So what is she complaining about? She makes her money trading on sex appeal, if not sexism.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]It took me at least ten minutes to find a decent picture of a spider bike (at least that's what we called them). Is something the matter with the internet today?

Lynx, you don't care about cheating in baseball, so your argument is kind of...obsessive?

Lynx. What level of cheating IS acceptable?
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In your own words. Just replace drug references with video:
"Times change, technology changes. We shouldn't be ruling out currently illegal performance enhancing drugs simply because that's not how things used to be. We should test these things, ensure their safety, protect the health of the athletes and accept that times change.
The current system isn't stopping anyone that wants to use them. When tests catch up to the doping, new doping is invented. All this does is expend huge resources in time and money and continue to endanger the health of the athletes. It also continues to unbalance the playing field."
You don't much care about baseball, so you are philosophical. You care about football, so...
:)
Crazy game alright. Patriots should have lost that one.

No bailout for anyone
[Read the article: Fake it until you make it: A housing flipper saga]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I kind of agree. If we don't stop these scams at some point, they will just keep occurring over and over. I'm thinking of the S&L debacle, I'm thinking Enron, and all the other crap in between.
Let the whole mess sink the economy. Then tighten up the rules, tighten up the regulations, and reinvigorate the SEC.
