You really have to hand it to Obama. This woman is going to sail through confirmation. Yes there will be some background noise on the way, but the Repubs are not going to dig in on this nomination. The court is actually moving right with a Souter for Sotomayor swap. Once again Obama has outfoxed the radical left by providing a nomination with the identity politics his party loves, but is actually a very moderate choice !
Don't know much about Elizabeth Wurtzel, but the fact that her parents divorced when she was young probably had a large impact on her life and "who she is". Commitment issues, drug abuse, narcissism.....sounds like she could have used a father.
"I believe that our society still considers somehow sexual infidelity to always be the "fault" of the scorned and the "right" of the cheater--especially if the cheater is a man"
I don't think I have ever seen this play out where the cheater was assumed to be in the right. Not sure where this comes from....except maybe a personal experience ?
Identify politics....blinds the left. If a white male were nominated to the court, with the SAME history and experience, the radical left would be screaming this nomination is too moderate, not liberal enough. She's a woman ?....oh she's acceptable. Obama continues to play the left like an instrument.
I'm glad to see there appears to be some folks in this thread actually paying attention. This is some shrewd identity politics being played by Obama. It's funny how the liberal feminists all fall in line on a nomination based strictly on gender. If Sotomayer were a white male with the same experience and record, nutjobs like Joan and Julieglib would be registering their disappointment with this moderate appointment.
With all the hate spewing here, you would think you folks forgot that many who supported Prop 8, also voted for Obama. You can't have a majority of the country, never mind a majority of CA, against gay marriage unless it's more than just conservatives. Guess what?....moderates are against gay marriage. Your gonna need to come up with some better ammo than blaming it all on the conservative fundamentalist religious types.....there aren't enough of them.
It's easy to see why the Repubs would use this methodology. This is very fertile ground as there are probably very few white men who have not had their careers impacted by mediocre affirmative action recipients.
Look, Sotomayor is going to get appointed to the SCOTUS without much trouble. Anyone who thinks she doesn't need to explain the quote "would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." is intellectually dishonest. This IS a racist and sexist statement with or without context, so although I support this nomination, I think Sotomayor needs to explain exactly what she meant.
Is pretty straight forward. No one is going to argue against people's unique backgrounds and experiences providing them unique insight into legal cases. What you didn't hear any white male justices say and what you DID hear Sotomayor say was that her background and experiences made her BETTER than that of white males. Straight forward sexism and racism. Now that Obama recognizes that statement for what it is, and gently stated that Sotomayor would no doubt choose different words, and apparently Joan has changed her position as well.....days later. Trust me, the whole country wants to hear her explain that statement.... not just right wing wackos, it's just that left wing radicals, and especially feminists can never admit any type of wrongdoing by their kind.
I wish you would turn some of your sharp criticism at some of your own. Much of what you describe in this post is absolutely relevant for many authors here at Salon, especially the chief editor. It'd be nice to see you hold some liberals accountable as well.
This post is offensive in so many ways I dont even know where to begin. What are the credential for this woman to even be writing this drivel ?
I feel much better now that leftist ditto heads have told us what Sotomayor "meant" to say. Great, a member of the Supreme Court that I need a liberal blog to translate for.
This is not new news. From my perspective, this makes perfect sense, so I am inclined to believe it.
I'd like to hear ur take on the gender gap developing in the workforce pipeline. This is not something liberals like to talk about, but even after accounting for class, the gender gap continues to grow. I know this is probably not an issue for symbolic analysts, but in just about every other discipline...there is a problem.
As heartbreaking as some of these stories are, I'm not sure pro-choice forces really want a debate on late term abortion. Outside of the health of the mother, there is very little support out there for them.
For nailing the pulse of the radical left. Now if you could only figure out what the rest (80%) of the country thinks.
Why don't you write an essay on why women treat other women like this ? Do women hate women ? That would make no sense, so you focus on the minority...men who connect the dots....so you can make your ideological point. Thank god for the gender beat !
