INTZEXEVSIZN02.iraq.centcom.mil is where the trail stops - it appears to be a general mail server, or server that many people can access.
e.g, search for that name here:
http://lists.army.mil/pipermail/mnfi_newsletter/2007-June.txt
My ***totally non-expert opinion*** is that
a. centcom.mil strips some of the headers, so we in the outside world cannot trace it back beyond INTZEXEVSIZN02. (I think it is good security practice for any organization, btw. Otherwise email sent from inside the org to outside can reveal a lot about the network.)
b. as a mail server/relay, the machine is available to many military personnel, and whatever civilians are in that domain.
c. Someone is really gunning for Glenn. The purpose of the bizarre email is to intimidate and to provoke.
d. An IT person in centcom.mil would be able to look up the logged transactions on INTZEXEVSIZN02 and determine further who sent the email.
e. Here comes the problem - why would they do this trace for Glenn, or inform him of the results?
Glenn, the emails you received should each have a line in the headers, looking something like this:
"Message-ID: <9116EBDE324D9C40A75FC26B023EE0258AE71C@INTZEXEVSIZN02.iraq.centcom.mil>"
I don't know whether there is any information coded in that long string; maybe others here do. And that Message-ID would be what someone could use to definitively trace down the email.
I hope salon.com has people with the expertise to help you. They may know the right channels to contact to take up this issue.
The IP addresses and mail headers do not prove anything. All we have a a relay from a mail server INTZEXEVSIZN02 to a mail server INTZEXEVSIZN01 (both on .mil's private network) to an internet gateway 02exbhizn02.iraq.centcom.mil [214.13.200.111].
The mail server/relay INTZEXEVSIZN02 is accessible by many people, I say this because you can search for it, and find it, e.g, here:
http://lists.army.mil/pipermail/mnfi_newsletter/2007-June.txt
http://lists.army.mil/pipermail/mnfi_newsletter/2007-January.txt
i.e., INTZEXEVSIZN02 is **not** Col Boylan's personal machine.
Anyone within the centcom.mil domain could have done this spoof.
Secondly, why don't we see any further [internal to .mil forwarding] headers behind INTZEXEVSIZN02?
My surmise is that the internal headers are stripped to avoid revealing internal network information - I think, btw, that that is good security practice.
This is not a newspaper with a limited front page or magazine with only one cover story or a newscast with only two minutes worth of headlines.
This is a blog, and **every** subject from Commander-in-Chief Bush to Lt. Col. Boylan can be pursued,
**simultaneously**
subject only to the limits of energy and time of the owner of the blog and its readers.
In the spirit of "Never Again", every atrocious conduct of this Administration, no matter how small, will be documented and be findable on google into Internet perpetuity.
Despite Egypt (Iraq?) Steve's objections.
Whom does he expect to convince? Is this the Beltway attempting to convince the Beltway, with all of America treated as idiotic spectators? This mirrors the Saruman-Gandalf dialog in the Lord of the Rings; who will be our Gandalf and tell Saruman to buzz off?
Am I to read Schumer's statement about the need to depoliticize the Justice Dept trumping the need to outlaw and prosecute torture as follows - we need an Attorney General who will not stand for attempts to overthrow the results of the 2008 elections?
For doing your best to open up space for discussion and debate with principled people who hold and act on reasoned convictions.
I hope at some point you will be able to provide commentary as well as facilitate debate among such people - Russert and Tweety as they ought to be - on air or internet broadcasts.
Thank you!
All those who see Glenn Greenwald as a water carrier for Ron Paul, etc., please reflect, you may be part of the problem.
If there is a debate going on, and someone tries to disrupt it and the bystanders shush the disruptive person, then it doesn't mean that the bystanders support or have declared for or are carrying water for whomever was speaking at that moment.
At some point in time, you've classified Greenwald as a liberal, which you've not understood as "one who behaves in liberal ways" but rather, one who spouts out liberal rhetoric and is against those who are not liberal.
It is a liberal value that Glenn Greenwald is defending here, namely, participation in a rational discourse without smears and other distractions.
And having to defend the Congress' authority to spend money on family planning in other countries without a constitutional amendment is ultimately, a good exercise.

" I believe that States and local governments have the right, protected by the Tenth Amendment, to adopt any sort of voucher program they believe meets the needs of their communities. "
In general, Ron Paul's arguments here are worth reading.
