The 2005 Grey Cup

No comments on Monday so I guess you missed one of the best Grey Cup games ever - DOUBLE OVERTIME to win for the double E. The camera coverage by CBC was superb including one of those cablecams effectively used. The commentators were apt, not blathering on and the very minimum of sideline commentary. They manage to mic people up so that it gave more flavour including great crunching hits.

The Black Eyed Peas tore through a hot set at half time choreographed precisely for camera angles (Fergie shaking her bootie and heaving up her "humps" for all viewers to marvel at) and all lights up in BC Place so everyone can howl "Let's Get Started" to usher in a heartstopping second half plus.

There was a crackle that ran through the 59,000 fans as the Grey Cup was brought down to the field level by two red serge RCMP in the last five minutes of the game. The Grey Cup is a handsome trophy well adjusted to include all the names in a large base. I loved it when Govenor General Michaelle Jean handed up the Cup to the captain of the EE who towered over her, giving the bottom a parting pat.

After the last of the breathless, thrilled to have been there comments, I watched a bit of the Sunday night NFL game. It looked squished and slooooowwww. It's not surprising that there is a loyal contingent from Baltimore that treks to the Grey Cup every year.

Refs, the sublime George Best, half-times (again)...

I agree with your desire to have refs ref decisively and well. Instant replay suspends the game and wrecks the rhythm of the play. I like the way MLB umpires confer to get calls right with no loss of authority and little delay.

No need to compare the NFL players with the CFL players - they are the best of their leagues.

I am under the impression that you are not much of a fan of the rest-of-the-world form of football, but let me join with another letter writer in praising George Best. In his prime he played a la Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky. He was the very essence of the Swinging Sixties - the human Jaguar XKE. The Man U website (www.manutd.com)is a good starting place to find out what a sportsman George Best was.

When are you going to start watching the NHL? Heck, even the Carolina Hurricanes are pretty darn exciting. I sure am enjoying all the Leafs vs Habs games on HNIC - home and home and home...eight games each I think.

AND...

The Black-Eyed Peas were 'hot'in a very special way - snuggled nicely under the big pillow of BC Place at +20 C. Remember when the Guess Who played half-time in Calgary a few years ago - it must have been -25 C with the wind chill, yet they rocked on, amazed that they could do it as they did it. Ask Doug Flutie - keep the gloves on as much as possible.

Then there was Michelin Marshmallow Lady Shania Twain in Edmonton for another -20 C Grey Cup - singing with joy and having a great time showing her Canadian bona fides. It was quite a contrast with Shania the slinky C&W chanteuse two months later at the Super Bowl probably worrying more about doing a half gainer off the cherrypicker that 'flew' over the crowd.
