  • Mexico and Canada Merger?

[Read the article: U.S. to merge with Mexico and Canada?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This absurd argument pre-supposes that Canada and Mexico WANT to merger with the USA. Really now when did anyone ever get this idea?! Certainly not in Canada or Mexico!! Or for that matter Americans wanting to merger with our nice but...umm... boring neighbor to the north or our kitchen help to the south!! I say this offensive phrase because the reality is it is a widely held belief and not because I believe it to be so. None the less could you imagine a world where America finds the humility and subservience to actually go through with this loss of self governance? Give me a break!

Here is a man who is only "against". He is not for anything only against everything. If he and his xenophobic ilk could just swiftboat themselves into retirement, the world would be a better place.

  • "According to top government officials"

[Read the article: An al-Qaida safe haven? Really?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I cut and paste below what is right now the top headline on CNN.com

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Al Qaeda will try to tap its resources and capabilities in Iraq in its efforts to exact another terrorist attack on U.S. soil, according to a top government intelligence report released Tuesday.

"In addition, we assess that its association with [al Qaeda in Iraq] helps al Qaeda to energize the broader Sunni extremist community, raise resources and to recruit and indoctrinate operatives, including for homeland attacks," states the declassified summary of the National Intelligence Estimate.

-So the conditions in Iraq are a breeding ground for Al-Queda? Oh my God!! Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?!!?

Clearly this has been put out to "scare up" some support for the Bush Administrations attempt to prolong our disaster in Iraq. The fact that those who released this at this time deemed it a tool in their idealogical struggle just shows

    A) They are not only corrupt but clearly stupid too and

    B) They think the public is even more stupid

I would like these "top government officials" to tell me exactly how much of an Al-Queda threat Iraq was before we bombed them into the 19th century? Then I would like for them to explain why we stopped going after them with any real zeal in Afghanistan...where they were cornered!

  • American Muslims

[Read the article: Leave the Muslim world alone]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It is a fact that Muslim immigrants are better integrated, better tolerated and wealthier than their counterparts in ALL other countries which receive immigrants from Muslim nations. It is also telling that American Muslims are not taking it to the streets in outrage like their spoiled white bread compatriots here at Salon.com. Yes there are many instances in history where the white western man did not treat others so well. There are as many instances of the opposite and even more instances of muslim vs. muslim or western vs. western atrocity. To sit back and say we deserve it for the sins of our past is futile and foolish. As most oppressed groups eventually realize, yes we were victims once...but we are not now. How do we stop pointing the finger at you and saying you did this to me and point it at ourselves and say so what do I do to get out of this situation? Unfortunately the answer for many is not much. Except for oil the middle east contributes almost nothing to the world at large and until they do, they will always feel put upon because they will always feel inferior. While I deplore GWB and his policies, there is truth in the fact that we do need regime change in the middle east so that the thugs which run the place are kicked out and peace and PROSPERITY can begin to take place. Once people have options and a future dream, like which exists in the US,all this will fall to the wayside.

-PS If the Arabs wanted peace between Israel and Palestine it would happen tomorrow. They don't because it gives their dissatisfied population a vent for their anger which is outside of their borders.

  • To all the calls for a third Party

[Read the article: What you missed while watching "Ask a Ninja"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

To all of the people crying for a third party, that idea is ill conceived and intolerant. First of all, in a 2 party system, there is overlap in philosophies. The Democratic line does not end at the Republican front door and visa versa. There is a (large) grey area where people can and do meet and agree on some topics. It is a DEMOCRACY after all. As an American living in Europe, I see the paralysis in governments when you have a multi-party system...Italy being the case in point. Smaller factionalized parties have a narrower scope of ideas and often selfish modes of governance. For them it's my way or the highway and unfortunately for the residents of multi-party governments, it is government by coalition which means that the moment you do or say something which a party does not like, they pull out and the governmant collapses. This is truly a government of special interestes. If you wish to really have a do nothing government, form a third, fourth and fifth party. If you cannot find your philosophy in the political spectrum as broad as that in the US, then you are an extremist. If your idea of governance is to pull out and destroy because you don't get your way when you want it then you are an extremist. It's good to have passion but not petulance and unfortunately there is too much of both here these days.
