Point of view from France

While I generally uphold a persons right to practice their faith as they see fit, I do feel that the wearing of a burqua is a step too far. All of the PC arguments made here in favor of a womans "right" to express her beliefs are made by the same people who might ridicule and lambast their own Christian heritage. Why is it so easy to find fault in ones self and purity in others? As for religious expression, if I decided that I needed to express my devotion to my god by covering puppies in a sac and beating them, pouring acid on them or otherwise mistreating them in a variety of ways, you would all scream abuse! abuse! Don't women have at least the same right to respect, safety and peace of mind that you would give a dog? The idea that we men will rape women if we even see them in public is absurd and the wearing of burquas is a burden imposed on women by their men who believe they cannot control themselves. Nobody has proposed that a woman cannot show her piety by covering her head. They just recognize slavery when they see it and shame on you for not seing it this way. On a purely tit for tat point, try wearing or worshiping anything which isn't Islamic in many of these countries and see what happens to you there. Many of these societies are still living in feudal times and are in conflict with the modern world. Maybe they are so "backward" because of this practice of subjugation of 50% of the population over centuries. There are times in history when a society stands up and says no this is not a good thing. Slavery? Civil Rights? Suffrage? It is a function of a healthy society in fact. I feel this is one of those times.

By all means vote for your candidate if that is Mc Cain, Obama or Nader! A vote for whomever your conscience tells you is correct is a good vote. A vote out of spite is only destructive and serves nobody. I don't feel that my opinion is skewed and I don't feel our country can afford the consequences of your points.

Obama vs. Hillary debacle

Since when does a segment of the party mutiny when they don't get what they want? What kind of crap is this anyway? In a democracy, you don't often get what you want...you must usually compromise. Bill Richardsons fans aren't threatening this, nor Bidens nor any of the other candidates. So your candidate lost. You're going to destroy the chances for a dramatic change from the way things are now because you didn't get your way? In the process of giving the Republicans another 4 years in the White House, you will also ensure the destruction of Hillary Clintons career as a politician. Do you really think she would have a chance in hell to be elected to anything if her "supporters" torpedoed Obama out of spite? A tit for tat war would destroy the Democratic party for a generation. Does Hillary deserve that because of your bile? Smarten up, grow up and stop crying already!

Hooray for California but...

This is a phyrric victory for those of us who have chosen a partner from outside of America. Until federal immigration law recognizes our multinational relationships, we have no recourse and are forced to live outside of the United States. Pushing states for the right to use the word marriage only makes the chances for repatriation dimmer for people like us.

A child cap?

Why not a tax rebate for those who choose self sterilization...and the ability to sell our rights to have children, much like the carbon tax in discussion?

All well and good

First I want to preface what I am about to say with I LIKE OBAMA and I would vote for him for president.

However, in a nation which wins or loses elections by one percentage point, what percentage of Americans will not vote for a black man? What percentage of Americans view life experience living in a Muslim country as a negative thing? These points are racist and unfair, they are also a reality of our nation (and many others) and out times. It is an extra hurdle or two that he must jump in order to be president and he might...someday...but as his stage has not yet extended beyond Illinois, we just don't know him really. While his oratory is lofty and inspirational, it should not fill in the hole that hard won experience will; and we have seen what happens when a man (or woman) with little world experience gains control, and we should never do this again regardless of the political orientation.

what a joke

So as I see it here, we blow up all industry, eat grass and then kill ourselves. THAT is what some of you here are basically saying. Fine. Start with the people who bore your stupid ass into this world.
