Original article: One-eyed modesty

A better suggestion

Has the esteemed cleric considered forcing all men to wear blindfolds instead?

If the problem is men seeing parts of women and going mad with lust, that would solve the entire problem immediately.

Of course, one might wonder about the strength of Muslim mens' character, if the mere sight of a woman's eyeball causes them to lose control of their own actions. If the Muslim faith is so strong, why do all of its adherents have to be continually tied to the mast to ensure that they practice it?

That's the beauty of it, isn't it?

For every bad practice that John McCain now embraces, there is video of an earlier John McCain condemning that very practice.

It's like he deliberately pre-produced the Obama campaigns ads for them...

Is the ballot valid?

If people use that ballot to vote, can their votes be counted for Barack Obama? Or is a ballot with "Barack Osama" checked considered a write-in for some other person?

Original article: The 60th senator

60 might not be necessary

I wonder, given a Democrat in the White House and the Republican party generally in disarray and lacking leadership, if it wouldn't be so hard to peel a moderate Republican or two away when necessary. If that's the case, even 58 or 59 in the Senate would be a pretty good position to be in.

wtf?

What's really bemusing isn't the truth or falsity of the report, it's the idea that ordering the wrong kind of food is considered a political scandal.

I'd think things like invading the wrong country by mistake, or deliberately suppressing global warming reports in order to help your friends in the oil industry, are scandals. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but what does lobster have to do with anything?

The wrong side of history

In 50 years, the arguments coming jmcdsf and all the other Yes-on-8 people are going to sound just as bigoted, quaint and absurd as anti-miscegenation arguments do today, and for all the same reasons.

Behind the facile, made-up arguments, the real reason people are against gay marriage is because they don't want to accept homosexuality as a valid part of the human condition... just as many in this country and others didn't want to accept black people as fully human in previous decades. But that doesn't change the reality -- homosexuals exist, they make up a significant portion of the population, and they have the inherent human right to marry the person they love, just as heterosexuals do. Protecting a minority from having its rights taken away by the majority is what Constitutions are for, and Prop 8 is an immoral end-run around the California Constitution.

Speaking of Family Circus...

Did anyone else notice that Dolly was dressed as Sarah Palin for halloween?

I was initially taken aback, but then I realized that this was the most provocative/interesting that has happened in the strip in the last 30 years...

@H.Dermish

Hi H.Dermish,

I'm sure there was a point to your post, but it was hard to discern behind all that froth coming out of your mouth. Perhaps you should take a Nyquil or three and call it a day.

@girlsix

It was a *joke* girlsix. You know, humor? Yes, it was full of stereotypes... that was the point. Get over yourself, black people don't need you to take offense on their behalf.

@ Citizen_X

Yeah, spray tanners.

In Todd's defense, it's not like you have much access to the real thing in winter Alaska.

Oh brother

She really is the Paris Hilton of politics, isn't she? (except that Paris Hilton had a better energy plan)

Step on it

My advice is this: if you see a camera being held underneath you, step on it. Hard.

Original article: What were you thinking?

Using the handicapped stall is okay

As long as there aren't any handicapped people waiting to use it. It's not like parking a car, where you're going to go off and leave for an hour or two.

What you are using it for is a different matter, of course...

Is this sort of of parsing really necessary?

Everybody has their own reasons for entering into sexual relationships, and their reasons are their business. Is it necessary for us to sit in judgement of other people's private decisions?

Give them a break

It's likely that any election this close would expose flaws in the electoral system. Election officials are only human, after all.

Perhaps there should be a rule that any election whose results are within the margin of error is called a draw, and causes a run-off election to be scheduled. (and if the run-off election is also within the margin of error, the candidates have to play rock-paper-scissors for it)

Cool!

I'm looking forward to refinancing my mortgage down to zero percent interest!

Other way around?

Isn't it just as likely that the story was taken down at the request of the Obama team?

Original article: Poison solar

Is "must be completely harmless" really the proper standard to use?

Or should the standard be "results in a net reduction of harm"?

If every new technology is required to be 100% free of all environmental impact, then the likely result will be that few technologies ever make it through the regulatory filters, and we are left with the status quo... which certainly would not pass the "harmless" test either, if we ever bothered to apply that standard to existing technologies.
