see the problem is that almost everyone sincerely believes that it IS a freak show

and so very few people feel any need or reason to react in any other way. It will be a long time before this changes I think.

Making sexuality the center of their self image isn't in their best interests.

The problem with this prescription is that telling it to someone who is biologically on "high" is like telling someone who is starving that the desire to eat shouldn't be the center of their self image.

Original article: Sugar, spice and science

speakling of logic:

the fact that not EVERY assertion of gender difference is valid does not mean that there are NO gender differences.

Thursday, July 3, 2008 07:30 PM

it's been very very obvious for a very very long time that the issue isn't mens problems with successful women it is the problems successful WOMEN have with men

or at least with men who aren't willing to worship them with the unquestioning, total and subservient devotion which they believe their success "competing in a mans world" has earned them and which they falsely believe, or claim to believe, that men get, or have ever gotten, from women.

Friday, July 4, 2008 12:39 AM

one thing that this whole controversy demonstrates is that calls for a REAL understanding of what gender REALLY is

are about more than just traditionalists using "essentialism" to prop up the patriarchy.

Friday, July 4, 2008 12:58 AM

so the true situation is: all gender is a social construct EXCEPT for people who feel trapped in the wrong body

for THEM ONLY it is an objective physical reality beyond the genitals with real social and behavioral implications which aren't entirely under the control of the environment. That it?

Friday, July 4, 2008 12:56 PM

everyone can or should agree that there are physical and chromosomal intersex disorders it still however remains an OPEN QUESTION

whether it is possible to have a biologically female brain trapped in a PHYSICALLY and HORMONALLY normal male body or vice versa, or if this IS possible, how many transgendered people have this specific brain issue and not some other problem.

Friday, July 4, 2008 01:17 PM

you overstate the importance of chromosomes, it's a little like the prolifers fixating on a unique set of chromosomes existing at conception

the issues, in both cases, are what develops, or has developed. As a general matter biologically If you have male hormone levels or female hormone levels at key points in development you have male or female, regardless of what the chromosomes are. NORMALLY the chromosomes control these hormones but not always, and in some species it is normal for the determination of which sex develops to be made by environmental factors (turtles, alligators) and not by which genes the embryo carries, some animals (reef fish) change gender as adults.

Friday, July 4, 2008 01:29 PM

obviously some people have a huge ideological problem with the idea of innate brain sex

and this is leading to fairly hilarious mental pretzels when they try, or sometimes when they don't try, to take the politically correct views of BOTH transgender and homosexuality.

Friday, July 4, 2008 01:37 PM

In you example Allie are you suggesting the your hypothetical Maria should be banished from the sisterhood or only allowed auxiliary membership

because she isn't a "real" woman?

Friday, July 4, 2008 01:41 PM

when they try to take the politically correct position regarding transgender, homosexuality and MOST OF ALL

gender roles and behavior among average heterosexuals.

Original article: Sugar, spice and science

have you been reading the transgender thread

cecil. You should check it out. Sometimes a different perspective can break through the mental fog created by relentless propagandizing.

Friday, July 4, 2008 01:54 PM

If you love, and feel deeply for, your partner these kind of questions don't matter.

Except when they do. If you love someone ENOUGH then NOTHING else matters, right?

Friday, July 4, 2008 02:04 PM

what this entire situation should be revealing is that gender is NEITHER subjective /whatever people want

OR simple.

Saturday, July 5, 2008 02:49 AM

unless in some objective physical sense the brain is female in a male body or vice versa then changing the body to match the brain is wrong

that is what a delusion is. It isn't real. People who believe that they are really meant to be amputees don't get doctors to agree to cut their legs off. Sometimes they force the issue by freezing their legs in liquid nitrogen until the doctors are forced to amputate. It may be that the wrong brain in the wrong body is the medical reality. I don't think this is clear for people without other evidence of chromosomal or hormonal abnormality, but it may be. It's absurd though to suggest that the question is beside the point.

Saturday, July 5, 2008 03:30 AM

I'm genuinely curious

how many people who try to get hormones and surgery are turned down on the grounds that they have some other problem than true trnassexualism and is there a consensus among the various doctors and psychologists involved and between various institutions doing this about who they are.

Original article: The male biological clock

it's obviously no myth that old men can have kids, are you nuts

if old men could be GUARANTEED pregnancy free sex with young women you can be sure that the economics of "courtship", as well as the mechanics of its consummation, would be very different than they are (for old men with money).

Tuesday, July 8, 2008 09:51 PM

since men have to make a lot of money if they want to have sex and women don't have to make any men's motivation to make money is MUCH HIGHER

(and this is even if you assume that the motive to have sex is equal, if you don't assume that the disparity in motivation is even greater) since this is the case it is difficult to see how men and women can ever be equal earners without a system which massively handicaps men.

Wednesday, July 9, 2008 06:02 PM

if NPs can replace fp/primary care doctors. or even if it widely believed, whether actually true or not, that they can why would ANY doctor EVER

go into it?

Original article: Here come the muhajababes!

"So many Egyptians -- and Arabs more broadly," LeVine laments, "prefer to continue dealing with the devil they know (corrupt and autocratic regimes) than to risk the even less appealing alternative of a religious state."

As well they should be, any so called political reform which BROADENS AND DEEPENS the role of the govt in policing personal behavior, which the establishment of any form of theocratic state by definition does, INEVITABLY MUST over the long (and ususally the short) run make the problems worse. The problem is that TOO FEW Muslims can see this, and its good to know that many do get it.

Original article: Here come the muhajababes!

hezbollah resistance to Israel is broadly supported but hezbollah is a specifically shia organization created by Iran to spread and impose wherever possible the iranian version of shia islam

so to characterize it as merely or even primarily a nationalist organization is totally incorrect.

Thursday, July 10, 2008 08:17 PM
Original article: Jesse Helms is not dead

if he has been winning, and a reasonable case is being made that he has, most of the people who supported and agreed with him

sure don't seem to see it that way.

Thursday, July 10, 2008 08:22 PM
Original article: Here come the muhajababes!

you are giving right wing obliviousness a good name

of course arabs and persians are rivals but so are shia and sunni and even though obviously lebanese shia are arabs and not persians it yet remains a fact that hezbollah is a shia organization bankrolled by persian shia iran for the purposes I've already described. Maybe it isn't only fox news watchers who have trouble with more than two options.

Thursday, July 10, 2008 08:28 PM
Original article: Here come the muhajababes!

BTW the historical record is crystal clear that hezbollah was created by the iranians

after the 1980 revolution and when it achieved spectacular success in driving the US out of Lebanon by the then new for the area technique of suicide bombing it's status was firmly established.

Friday, July 11, 2008 07:40 PM
Original article: Here come the muhajababes!

obviously hezbollah has local support so they are not ONLY an iranian outpost

they are an iranian outpost with local support

Friday, July 11, 2008 07:44 PM
Original article: Here come the muhajababes!

yes the Iraqis were just one big happy family

until the US got involved.

Sunday, July 13, 2008 01:45 PM
Original article: Torture and the rule of law

pursuit of war crimes through international institutions might have at least one practical effect:

govts would be under pressure from their publics not to host the military forces of an outlaw regime, if this results in a reduction of the US military presence around the world that would be something.

Monday, July 14, 2008 10:24 PM
Original article: The end of men

it's obviously not necessary to get rid of all the men to have a totalitarian matriarcy, Sweden has one already(prostitution laws)

and everyone else who matters is well on the way, BTW swinick I guess you missed the story where the ability has ALREADY been demonstrated to create sperm cells(obviously containing no Y chromosome) from stem cells of women. Men are biologically obsolete now.

Monday, July 14, 2008 10:45 PM
Original article: Prada: The new puberty

well since they aren't allowed to become women by having sex, or at least sex/relationships with men

this seems like the sort of substitute you might expect.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 02:21 AM
Original article: Prada: The new puberty

"Heroines no longer become women through romance, they become feminine through consumption."

this would seem to imply that either they are not doing it, or at the very least they are doing it with a diminished sense of its importance.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008 02:36 AM
Original article: The end of men

if women are going to be running things anyway it would probably be better for the men if there were fewer of them

they wouldn't lose any power because they won't have any anyway and if the male population gets low enough at some point it would be small enough to be the same size as the small percentage of the female population which is as interested in men as men are in women. i.e they are willing to make sacrifices for sex and not resent it.
