[Read more letters about this article: Here]I assume the point is that since there is supposedly virtually never any real punishment that THAT fact is meaningful in itself independent of the particulars of a given case. (Actually in the TINY number of cases which are prosecuted the women tend to receive some punishment, but the circumstances have to be almost freakishly rare for a prosecution to occur at all. Any adult woman can have all the teen boy sex she wants with virtually no risk and men do not have this opportunity with teen girls, not that they should necessarily although an age of consent of 18 or 21 is too high).

have to say that I think that the utter disbelief and disapproving finger-wagging displayed in the majority of the posts would disappear if the authors would only familiarize themselves with some of the recent work on sex and evolution.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]If people were prepared to familiarize themselves with the facts of biology regarding sex and the differences between men and women 40 years of feminism would have to be rethought. Interestingly enough, 40 years ago the concept of the androgynous brain was (somewhat)scientifically credible. It's not a coincidence that even though this ceased to be true 30 years ago and the mountain of evidence has piled higher and higher ever since that this "lack of familiarity" with the facts of life persists.

The hierarchy always has to strike a balance between asserting it's authority and having to excommunicate so many people that the church is destroyed. Despite the bravado of "conservatives" if they REALLYy stuck to the "follow ALL the rules or you're out" line there would be no church, or it would be tiny.

Even if the facts are known it often doesn't matter until someone prominent on the inside confirms them. Until then it is possible for partisans to ignore them and for all discussion to be stigmatized as partisan. Once someone prominent confirms everything this becomes much harder. This fact is much more important now and in the future than any personal reactions that anyone might have to an individual.
