First, congratulations to GG on the second coup that I can see since I began observing this site and the commenters.

One is the Klein story and the second is the Dodd story.

I was trying, on the fly, to figure out where the brainstorm about the hold came from, and it came from Jim White.

    Note to sTiVo:

I live in the New York metro market area and my Times, which is delivered, does have the Dodd story. The Times, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post all have the Dodd story online this morning. Unfortunately, the Times is not going to hold the national edition for all late stories, even one like this. It doesn't imply a conspiracy.

If you are a Chicago commuter, which it sounds like, you should complain to the Tribune about not having the story in this morning's paper in time for your ride into town.

I'm acknowledging you because, as I said, I was trying to get a grip on where the idea for the hold came from, and Glenn is giving you a top o' the mornin' on it.

In my short time dabbling here, I have been impressed by the clarity of thought by all who step up; and, again, though I have some professional media experience, including reporting, I'm still taking baby steps with the technology. What occurred here with the Dodd story, on the level of activism, was impressive. With that, I also sense the power of the other sites and bloggers. I can smell a good story in the old way, but I'm learning fast on the tech side.

Thank you also for previous exchanges, especially on the OLC issue and Whitehouse.

Let me put it another way (jock talk always helps): you were quarterbacking yesterday's activities here.

At the least, bloggers helped Sen. Dodd score a field goal, and post a timeout, in the United States Senate.

I assure you I am not a mole for the New York Times; nor am I an apologist for any MSM or establishment news shop.

However, as I pointed out to sTiVo in an earlier post, the Times did run the Dodd story this morning in a hard copy version. I looked for it on page 1, but it appears on page A-29 in the National Affairs section of the New York metro press run.

How important is the story? Well, it depends, but I was cool with how it was placed.

I was excited by yesterday's events here on Salon - really excited; and I looked for the story in the Times first thing this morning. I get it delivered, so I'm lucky in that way. The first cup-a-joe tasted pretty good as I jumped right in.

I agree that we're in uncharted waters in this country politically; it's perilous.

I'm grateful that the blogosphere is taking off and is flexing some serious journalistic muscle along with the activism. It couldn't come at a better time.

    But proportionality is good too.

The Times would not logically hold its national edition for the Dodd story, or any story, to satisfy Chicago readers. It would have to be huge for editors to hold the national edition, never mind the front page; and I think you can debate whether the Dodd story had to be on today's front page also.

But it was in the paper.

I appreciate your reply. I'm sure your letter, when sent, will be well written. It already is.

There's so much fluidity in the reporting game, between print, broadcast, and now, on the Internet. I'm sprinting to catch with digital technology myself, big time. It's daunting; but I'm game.

I love to hold a paper in my hand in the morning, and I know the younger bloggers out there will laugh as I express that preference.

But traditional daily newspapers, in hard copy form, are threatened with extinction. You could argue they're a threat to the environment.

Seems to me any major news outfit had to be careful about the placement of the Dodd story because he's a presidential candidate. If the big broadsheets of influence put that story on the front page this morning - the hard versions - they could open themselves to a charge of favoritism.

So? - how to place it; how to play it?

I do think what Dodd did is huge; my juices are flowing, but as a reporter more than an activist.

I think Dodd was able to chip a field goal and get a time out in the Senate.

    There's breathing room.

Let's see what happens in January.

Get out there and mix it up! Time's a wastin'.

I have the feeling that you, be bop, and I - and maybe one or two others operating in this little universe - are old mates, like those ghosts who came out to fight at the end of Lord of the Rings.

Old farts like us, familiar with some aspects of uniformed service, and, some of the younger vets too, might enjoy jumping up and getting it on in this big battle, if a few energetic Aragorns appeared out there, waving big broadswords and appealing to our better angels.

Onward! Down with the Orcs. Down with Mordor.

(Your wife probably could do with a bit more quality private time too.)

    - End inspirational message -

About casting: sh**ter as Gollum? Check.

But we need to talk about saving The World of Men and Women. It's way past time.

He's another old fart, and a peer of mine; though unlike me, a grunt at the time, he is a man who had real command responsibility - when it was required.
