Keillor Rocks
[Read the article: A walk on the ice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The timing of this article was perfect for me personally, which reminds me that the personal is also universal. Like radio frequencies, grand themes and ideas are out there for those who are tuned in to them. Great artists and communicators "lasso" these themes, and make sense of them in ways that penetrate the fog of the masses. You can't reach everybody, but some you will. And if you keep at it, slowly, surely, you will inspire enough to influence the collective consciousness. That is writing as a heroic quest, and it takes more courage than most will ever realize is available to them.
Clearly our cowardly "Annonymous Ass-Clown" below (see bottom letter), is tuned in to a different bandwidth, and that's fine. I suspect his/her motivation for writing is more about the thrill of seeing himself say "sanctimonious ass-clown" in print. Whatever.
Thanks Mr. Keillor, your articles always seem to find me when I most need them.

Its called asymetrical warfare...
[Read the article: Is Israel facing a quagmire?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm always amazed to read quotes from those who seem amazed at the dirty underhanded tactics of the (guerillas, insurgents, terrorists).
During our own revolutonary war the British complained about fighting an enemy that didn't line up and "fight like honorable men" (you know- like a big football game). These kind of complaints usually come from the side that's getting it's ass kicked.
Asymetrical warfare is the present & future, and the established militiaries of the world had better learn how to fight it, or stay the hell out of these types of conflicts in favor of precise "out of the blue" surgical strikes based on rock solid intelligence.
And speaking of intelligence- the army just discharged another Arabic speaking translator because...he's homosexual.

I should have just read a book
[Read the article: Think you know how to read, do you?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...I came to the horrible realization that I had just finished reading a review of books that discuss how to better read books.
I then reflexively went to the page where readers discussed the review of books that discuss how to better read books. And then I posted this.

bah.
[Read the article: Fondling Stephen Colbert]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I thought Jane was incredibly sexy, bold, and making a very funny statement about disarming conservative blowhards.
Granted, Colbert is not a "real" conservative blowhard, he just plays one on TV, but the premise to me was Jane winking- "See, you're not so big and mean, you just need a little love..." Which to me is very funny. I loved it and laughed the whole time. I was actually flabbergasted to read Joan Walsh's interpretation.
Prude, Joan? I don't know. You also wondered if you were just jealous, and I think this might be closer to the mark. But at any rate, it seems you missed the joke. I think you were way off on this one.

Bipolar
[Read the article: I enlisted in the Army -- but now I've changed my mind!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Your letter screams bipolar disorder to me. I don't think you'll have any problem getting out of your military commitment anyway, but you should definitely see a therapist no matter what.

Nixing Audiophile?
[Read the article: Cindy Sheehan's wrong turn]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I've been turned on to some of my favorite music through Salon.
I've probably told more people about Salon because they ask me- "now where did you hear about this band?" I hope that you've got something cool planned for music fans on Salon.

I used to think that I was a bitter misanthrope
[Read the article: What would we see if we were behind your eyeballs, Cary?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...but the psychotic negative comments that are being posted in response to Cary's column lately have made we feel quite sane by comparison.
It's one thing to say that the advice was way off today, and here's why. It's another to spew your personal hatred online. We get it. You're a better writer than Cary, and there's no justice in the world, and you should have an advice column because you'd be so good at it.
If it makes you haters feel better, your words are having an impact. Your angry tirades ripple out into the ether and infect others, making the world a slightly nastier ruder place.
Seriously, do yourself and the world a favor and get some help. It cannot be healthy to have such a fixation on an advice columnist, or trying to get him fired or whatever it is you think you're trying to accomplish.

nice.
[Read the article: I quit being a musician because I couldn't play without drinking]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Great letter & response. I've been a functioning working musician most of my adult life now, with varying ups & downs in the pot & alcohol dept., mostly a very light user of both. However, I've suspected that there could be a higher reality to my life if I could break through and move beyond those barriers (pot & alcohol). Taking it one step at a time, I just quit cigarettes 2 months ago and haven't looked back...maybe I can continue to "evolve." This letter was helpful. Thanks to the lw and Mr. Tennis.

Photo should be dated 1978, not 1988.
[Read the article: What makes Biden Biden?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That would be 1978. Is that a Salon error or an AP error?
