"but a recovery can't be built on replacements. "

if you can't build a 'steady-state' society, you are doomed to boom, and bust. population growth and resource depletion means ultimate collapse of society. maybe not this time, but the ooming ecological crisis suggests this or the next one could be the last bust. the one america doesn't get up from. possibly because the whole world is ruined.

politics as usual will not save us. politicians can not lead us. so let's open another bottle of wine and remember when gm was healthy, and torturers were scum. great days, gone forever!

you can be outraged all you want.

but there's nothing you do. just cattle milling around in the holding pen, waiting for the hammer.

we need not ascribe any great virtue to sotomayor.

she will easily surpass the cyborgs who currently are defending wealth from the people, simply by being a decent human being.

this is not a matter of justice,

or even logic. this is the eternal struggle for power, haves vs. have-nots.

the haves always win, but the fight goes on because the have-nots can't afford to retire.

Original article: Too big to fail after all

socialism is the cure...

during the periodic eruptions of capital excess. but no one ever says" i've got an idea, why don't we stop waiting for the next catastrophe, and use socialism always?"

because of course, americans are conditioned to believe that rich people and would-be rich people must be free to loot the economy, lest ...

well, all they can come up with is nonsense. capitalism is nonsense. but nonsense backed by wealth and greed is powerful, and america continues to lurch from one collapse to the next, saying "capitalism works!"

as indeed it does, for a few.

no big problem.

if bho is serious, he can conduct a mock referendum on the web, and invite 'yes' votes to insert their name and postcode on a stock email form to send to their reps.

if a big majority of people want 'single-payer,' and are willing to say so, it will be a very tough politician who votes 'no.'

so far, i have seen no evidence that bho is serious about anything, except he quite likes being president. mind you, he well knows the quality of the american electorate and is entitled to be cynical about 'managing' them.

don't you ever wonder,

why cheney, and indeed '43', can order things done involving murder, mass and retail, without consulting the people who will get the return fire?

and why '44' is disinclined to pursue the matter, presumably because he intends to do the same. indeed, stories from diego garcia and bagram suggest he already is.

on successive days, after 9/11, dubya and powell said "this is not the result of american foreign policy." amazing! more amazing was that americans swallowed it. i have regretfully concluded that americans will have to suffer for their ignorance, for their bigotry, for their supine acceptance of rule by a guild of people whose ethics would disgrace a crack dealer.

it's not good enough to say "dubya is evil." you have to take power away from politicians and put it in the hands of the people. until then, this charming scene of middle america is just a thin screen over complicity in the crimes of the government.

Original article: The trans bathroom debate

call me old-fashioned,

but women need a 'women's room'. it's hard enough fending off unwanted attention when clothes aren't disarranged.

of course, if all men become sophisticated gentlemen, no problem. let's wait till that happens.

Original article: Trusting Walter Cronkite

when peopler get paid...

to report the news, the news that gets reported is what maximizes income.

cronkite swallowed the national myths, and was willing to be lied to, like everyone else. if he came to be saddened by watergate and the war in asia, neither he nor any other media figure asked how such things came to pass. he was only disappointed that america's crimes finally became so obvious that they had to be disapproved of.

there will be no more more 'cronkites', because america has finally begun to grasp the character of their masters, and restrict their 'belief in' to the next king, who will not be a liar, a presider over murder teams and torture 'contractors.'

this limited belief is equally barren, as obama supporters are beginning to realize.

abandon hope.

the planet has already been looted, china, and india and brazil, are just mopping up the rest of the resources.

the effluent of the human race may kill us before the resource failure, both ends of looming ecological catastrophe beyond human capability to control.

humanity was smart enough to overrun the planet, not smart enough to control itself.

interesting times coming, best of luck with that.

if you were a reporter,

instead of a tame hack, you would be finding out, and reporting, what mighty obama, king of the beltway, is actually doing. is it really golf? what's his handicap? why three golf courses? any pretty young women being ferried into the locker room? who is he playing with, at whatever game?

like the other hacks who were fed 'official' news for the last 50 years, you are not reporting, just broadcasting.

just because obama may be taking a day off is no reason for you to think you should too.

Sunday, July 19, 2009 08:07 PM

what kind of analysis is this?

if '76 voters had been faced with today's problems, malcolm x would have been president, as long as he said "i can fix it, yes i can!"

he might not have been willing to, due having more ethics than bho, but.

relax, guy, it's true the gop is hopeless, but dem supporters are waking from the trance and will be staying home in great numbers in 2012.

the american version of montague/capulet is becoming a little old, even americans are beginning to wonder why every time they vote, only a politician wins. further activity will be a matter of fans only, and hired guns. the party of naked money has a natural advantage there, and will comeback in the long afternoon of oligarchy.

Original article: Goodnight, moon travel

the letters pretty well outline why the human race is in trouble, and unlikely to survive.

but it's nice to be reminded how much we could achieve if a handful of fairy dust suddenly turned humans into rational and ethical creatures.

ain't gonna happen, sorry mister romm.
