Having read the article and all of the letters so far, the thought that presses upon me is that we may now be in the last stages of liberalism. I say that because if there actually is an energetic "movement" for impeachment, that will be the train that takes liberalism out of practical, i.e., political, reality. Possibly two or three letters spoke of getting out the vote; the rest debate which is more "realistic", impeachment, secession, insurrection, or constitutional amendment. As an ideological outsider to doctrinaire liberalism (or progressivism, or democratic partyism), it appears to me that pathology is creeping in on the Left. And if you don't see how I could be correct, then it is certainly too late for you.
Will this help the Democrats?
Friends are non-judgmental, or at least give you the benefit of the doubt when at first blush it appears you treated them badly. Then maybe a brief talk about it. If your "friend" makes a big deal from the git-go, especially w/o that preliminary brief discussion, then screw him, he's not a friend, he's a friendly acquaintance maybe good for hanging with once in a while. I had a similar experience with a very long term friend (decades) who from time to time gave me stomach-clenching tension with his mishagas. Finally he stayed at my house at my invitation for a few days, but once or twice I "abandoned" him to talk on the phone to other friends or what not -- this a total of an hour or two over 3 or 4 days. He took umbrage, and that was my cue to finally free myself of his BS. Haven't seen him since and have refused his offers to get together.
OK, it hasn't been proven yet, but lefty sites like this one hardly wait for proof before posting banner headlines about Republican misdoings...this guy served under Bush II but was not identified with him, so now the report gets the casual treatment...typical
Sir, you take we Americans to task for our profligate use of energy as compared with the rest of the world. I did not hear comments like that when we were saving your royal arses during World War II, but let that pass. The fact is, Sir, since you lost your bloody Empire, the only thing that prevented you from being as "profligate" as we is that you can't afford it. So would you kindly go bugger yourself and cease your public envy.
Yours,
Yank
A few letters think having a woman president would be a bonus to the country. This is not explained -- in these times diversity is considered extrinsically good. Then let's go for a Black, even a Black woman, and one who is really Black -- not, e.g., a Justice Thomas. So a black woman from the 'hood, single mother. Sounds racist on my part? Voting for Hillary because she's a woman sounds sexist to me. I'm interested in my country, and then the world -- not bragging rights for women (or any other group, for that matter). Is Hillary the best candidate? Forget her gender when you think about that. The only way gender would be relevant is if her presidency somehow improved the lot of women...do you have any reason to think that would happen? Then vote for a Black person...they need even more improving.
Yes, people who recycle computers are doing good, but really: try packing a computer if you haven't saved the original shipping cartons. If I saved mine I would have no room to sleep. Next, cross-examine the recycler with all these questions. I can hardly blame people who are uncomfortable with this or think it won't lead to honest answers any way. Finally, the q about wiping hard drives: if you give away your computer with the hard drive in it, you're an idiot, if a sympathetic idiot.
at the letters from liberals here. What logic (we are all immigrants -- you can't hate people who want a better life, etc., ad nauseum. Listen it's true me and mine got ours, so economically I don't give a rat's ass if the illegals steal jobs from Americans (another master stroke of logic: liberals believe the race to the wages bottom stops at lettuce picking, and doesn't inevitably edge up through skilled labor, etc.). I don't care if millions of Mexicans have to pick garbage because nobody encourages or makes them learn English. What I want to see some day is the libs realizing their standard of living has gone down as their taxes go up for services for illegals. What a hoot!
I must apologize for not writing the analysis of this piece I was preparing to. I just got word I have to go to the meeting of the Jewish group that runs America. Bye bye!
The problem with pieces like Conason's (and contrary to one writer below, they have been popping up in other places) is that he doesn't ask what do we lose if we don't attack Iran. Without focussing on that aspect of the problem, of course it seems insane to fool with that country. But even the multiculturalists who inhabit this site will not sleep well once there is an Islamist bomb.
Yes, healthy eating is good, and serving your children healthy food is good, but lady, you are neurotic, and your child is going to be neurotic about food. Sorry, but that's the way it is. (Or should I have said, good night, and good luck.)
OK, maybe Sid has a column to write, and he must do his duty, but what is the point of this piece? That Bush has a political operative named Rove who will work to help Republicans in November? Stop the presses -- especially because the Dems don't use operatives of Rove's ability, and have semi-publicly lamented that gap. As for Bush's stick-to-itiveness, another scoop for Sidney -- most of us had always thought Bush would morph into a leader like, say, John Kerrey.
