Libby's Options

if Libby doesn't cop to a plea or get the charge dismissed or persuade the president to grant him a pardon

A pardon for Libby? Bush would have to eat a heapin helpin pile of his own words for that to happen. Libby is distanced just far enough away for him to take the heat on this case. I would think a plea bargain would allow the fastest way out.

Confession

Why does Doug have to confess to Mark? Why doesn't "falling" call Doug's minister and enlist his help? While Doug won't listen to her, he is likely to listen to his preacher.

Original article: Why Johnny can't code

Linux?

BASIC is available for Linux in a quick to install, true to (at least my) memory of its PC implementation. As is virtually every other language a curious young mind would want to explore. Installation of Linux on a common PC became relatively simple a couple of years ago.

A bazzar of software is available for that platform that would allow your son, or other curious people, to explore a multitude of disciplines.

I, for instance, have embarked on ear training and music theory.

bwBasic, the version I installed to check what I was saying here, describes itself as:

The Bywater BASIC Interpreter (bwBASIC) implements a large superset of the ANSI Standard for Minimal BASIC (X3.60-1978) and a significant subset of the ANSI Standard for Full BASIC (X3.113-1987) in C. It also offers shell programming facilities as an extension of BASIC. bwBASIC seeks to be as portable as possible.

bwBASIC can be configured to emulate features, commands, and functions available on different types of BASIC interpreters; see the file INSTALL for further installation information.

Original article: Howard Dean, vindicated

If you agree with Joe let the DNC know

The DNC has a contact form at http://www.democrats.org/page/s/contact if you agree with Joe's comments about Howard Dean visit the site and let the DNC know your opinion.

Less than two minutes effort to support Dean and his (solid, long term) 50 state strategy.

As an aside, "just lost his house race" Ford for DNC Chairman? Is Carville pandering to those who felt Dean was too stingy with DNC money? Maybe they should look to Oregon where the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Ron Saxton, raised and spent record amounts[1] in an unsuccessful bid. He outspent incumbent Kulungowski by something like a 1.8:1 margin. That didn't get him into office. Those who complain about Dean's stinginess need to contemplate the efficiency of allocations.

[1] I'm always amazed by candidates that proclaim how they will lessen government spending by enforcing efficiency while spending record amounts on their campaigns. Almost as amazing as the voters who support that contradiction.

Great Change

I look forward to the more civil discourse this will encourage.

Car Purchases aren't caching in on home equity

A home equity loan is tax deductible. Therefore it is cheaper than comparable financing, like a straight ahead auto loan. The debt for a car purchase can be secured by the car itself. Alternatively, the debt can be secured with the equity in a house. If the tax adjusted rate on the home equity load is lower it's not too irrational to exercise that option.

or he could...

Get married to someone who would support him. Have a day job as a house husband as it were.

Worked great for a jazz guitarist I know. He used to tell me how jealous all his music friends were, he lived like a king.

Real Geek Analysis

Upgrade from your CRT to an LCD? Wait! What is the energy cost of manufacturing and delivering the LCD? What is the energy cost of disposing of the CRT?

A real geek would figure out the trade off and determine if the energy savings are greater than running the CRT to end of life.

Alas, I'm not a real geek and can't give you an answer or guidelines.

posting from the ride? Yep!

480 miles, 6 or 7 days. It's not that hard.

When I rode Cycle Oregon I was in my first year of bike riding. When I started bicycling the previous year I was an "overweight (265 pounds), asthmatic, gout afflicted middle aged (late 40s) guy with an uncorrected cholesterol level as high as my weight."

By the time Cycle Oregon rolled around I'd lost 20 or 25 pounds but the rest of the ills remained - the product of 30 years of sedentary living.

If I could do it you can too.

Not A Cliffhanger

The group behind Ugly Betty didn't leave us with a cliff hanger - we're in free fall, grasping for whatever will save us.

Will Santos die?

Will Daniel live?

Will Claire come unchained (and find her children)?

Will Bradford become unglued?

Will Marc and Wilhelmina find their true loves?

Will Ignacio return to the US before his old enemies get revenge?

Just who is Amanda?

Just who is the father of Charlie's child? (Is she _really_ preggers?)

What will become of Betty?

And I used to think 24 was suspenseful.

Original article: An inconvenient bottle cap

What? No bottle opener on your keychain?

Maybe it's a Portland beer geek thing. With a bottle opener on the key chain I'm always ready. Hooray for Sierra Nevada protecting their beer from oxygen! As soon as I get home I'll open a '02 Bigfoot and raise a toast to them.

Products like this are problems for Mac

Who needs to buy a Mac for ease of use with tools like Flektor?

This is way cool.

Traditional Response

This is what Nixon asserted, is it not? Let us hope our congress is as strong as the one we had in '73.

Since Sex Sells

I'd like to see the researchers try a variation on their experiment. Rather than a politician, morph the person's characteristics with a sexually desirable avatar. Have the avatar try to persuade the subject to buy something, donate to a cause, or take other concrete action.

Would they?
