Tsunami? Really, not a better description for the womens movement? I also get to hear a lot of baby boomers describe them aging as a Senior Tsunami, ick. An almost unpredictable, catostrophic event...I think not.
I asked my grandmother how she was able to only have 4 kids~last one in 1960. It was because her doctor gave her the PILL. She was always so thankful that she wasn't Catholic because she said having just 4 kids was so much easier.
Thank goodnesss for population control.
Lots of long standing institutions knew/know exactly what can of worms gets opened when we allow large populations to control their own destiny. By 1961 over a million women were on the pill which caused all sorts of inevitable socialogical and economic changes but really hardly a Tsunami.
We know as a society that change causes turmoil. This is why we do not truly work extend the kind of freedom we enjoy economically, politically, with regard to gender and race to persons outside our borders(both personal & geographic).
Mad Men is a show. There is great suffering in the world especially for women and children. Babyboomers everywhere get over yourself.
I say this because Gen X is even reaching 40 now and we are not going on and on about how our moms worked, our parents were divorced and most of us had a key to the house by 3rd grade~this was especially true if our parents were babyboomers by the way. The 60's are over! Now would be an important time to think about the lessons learned and how we can begin to extend the kind of personal freedom we know enjoy to people who are suffering. Can we do this without causing war? & with respect for cultural differences everywhere? I think this will happen when we get a little less self absorbed.
I have been reading this discussion and have abstained from weiging in until now. People have different reasons for homeschooling and have varying outcomes...same goes for public school. I have one child in public school and one homeschooling for the first time.
I agree that homeschooling 5 year olds is a delightful journey that can get more complicated as they get older....same goes for public school; it gets harder. Now if the laws allow it why so much concern? States are continually allowed to have low graduation and literacy rates (do I need to mention how the U.S is doing in math) with no real improvement...who is looking out for those kids?
My child will have to take an annual standardized test(the homeschooler not the public schooler), I prepared a curriculum to be approved by my district and I will have to submit quarterly report cards, all at my expense. I think that most peoples experience with homeschoolers is anecdotal at best.
I cannot speak for all homeschooling families but it is a personal decision as far as I can see just like breastfeeding, religion, relationships, daycare, staying at home full-time you name it but it seems to bring out such a weird hostility especially on Salon. Walk a mile. Situations differ, children differ, lives are diverse...thank goodness we have a CHOICE to send one child to school and have one of ours to learn at home.
Why, why, why...please find another topic (aka not sex, sexuality, pornography,or feminism) to write about. Tracy Clark-Flory your embarrassingly personal take on issues of sexuality and feminism make your articles so HARD TO READ without wanting to run out of the room with embarrassment.(note to editors she is Ruining Broadsheet) You tried very, very hard to not let your insides out on this one Tracy Clark-Flory but you have a very narrow view of the world that we know just where you are coming(I know you can barely read the word "coming" without some horrible afront to feminism/humanism/ismism) from on each question in this article that I just cringe~your leading & horribly connected to your agenda questions~EEK. Own it! You are Victorian at your core dear. Stop it already, own being prudish~own it!...It could be a very SEXY & Smart writing angle. Cheers Darling. P.S. Stop making us fear your by-line.
and refraining from spray tans and or Al Gore's make up artist would be extremely helpful Mr. Senator. No saracasm or joking intended. Seriously, tone down the orange at all costs. Try to look presidential, not retired. Best of luck.
