[Read the article: Obama campaign: Clinton should renounce remarks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Don't be discouraged. It is really important for all of us who do care about change to realize that Hillary, Barack and John are ALL much, much better candidates than anyone on the Republican side. It really doesn't matter which of them is nominated, it matters that they stay committed to undoing the harm that has been done and making life in this country less difficult and decisive.
Each has strength; each has weaknesses. Each is human. Each is committed to principles that Democrats care about. I think we should, as Democrats, all join together in encouraging our candidates to keep their campaigns focused on the issues and stay away from nitpicky attacks on each other.
I realized, reading all the letters about this, that we could easily self-destruct if we allow ourselves to be drawn into the petty stuff. Let's focus, as voters, on the big picture and let's work together to hold ALL our candidates to that standard. This is still the people's country.

Credit for intelligence
[Read the article: Bob Johnson's "free ride"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Anyone who saw Bob Johnson making his remarks doesn't need the Washington Post or anyone else to "interpret" for them. Anyone who didn't see them, probably isn't interested enough in the 'news' to care what Bob Johnson says or meant.
I wish the press would give voters a little more credit for intelligence. i think this whole campaign "nastiness" is a produce of the 24-hour news cycle that supports a lot of people with not enough to do and not enough grit to go out and really report the issues. It's easier to play 'controversial' sound bites over and over and over until it seems like they're the only thing that's happening.
How about laying off the easy, phony issues and focusing on what the candidates are saying, and how they differ, on the things that matter.

Anything, anything ...
[Read the article: Mitt Romney's Rodney King moment]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Mitt Romney will say or do anything to get elected. It is truly pathetic.
-
What would Huckabee do?
[Read the article: Huckabee: Amend Constitution for God]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If Mitt Romney were elected President? Or we elected a Jewish man or woman to be President? Or at some enlightened moment we elected a non-believer?
Does he think we should be rewriting the Constitution every time a new religious majority comes into power?
Is he nuts?
Rhetorical question.

Consistency
[Read the article: Clinton calls Bush's oil efforts "pathetic"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Well, you've got to give them credit for consistency.
Dana Perino is just as stupid and insensitive as her boss, and the administration has made crass ignorance a consistent practice.
So, no surprises here.

If you get hold of them, Tim ....
[Read the article: Having it both ways]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If you get hold of the Clinton campaign, Tim, while you have them on the line, would you ask them to tell you what Hillary's position is on the national debt, trade with China, the recession...
That's what I care about.
Oh, and if you get hold of Tim Russert any time soon, tell him some people are truly sick of his snarky, gotcha! interview technique.
-
Stifle Russert!
[Read the article: The Democrats defeat the media]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Tim Russert is a blowhard, gotcha! interviewer who really should be retired. I'm glad the candidates didn't take his bait and I wished, through the whole debate, that "the hook" would magically appear and drag him off the stage, never to be seen moderating anything again. Listening to him makes the commercials a welcome relief!
But despite Tim, this was the most informative and civil of all the debates so far, and it made me wish that all three candidates could be president. I hope they will all have prominent roles in the future of the country, regardless of which one ends up winning the election. At last, INTELLIGENT people who actually can articulate ideas in whole sentences.

This would be tragic
[Read the article: Do they have transcripts of "Law & Order," too?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This would be tragic if Thompson had ANY chance at all ...
But he's just a sad old dude, and the only things I can see that he has in common with Ronald Reagan is forgetfulness and wrinkles. Oh, and a total lack of understanding of economics.

Get over it
[Read the article: Nasty, again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Politics is not pleasant, unfortunately.
After what Karl Rove and his Swift-Boaters did to John McCain in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004, anything that happens in this election, so far, looks tame.
Anyone who has the money and manages to avoid using swear words can make and disseminate a campaign ad. People who support candidates (just read the posts in Salon's War Room) tend to get much more nasty and obnoxious about the candidates they don't support than the candidates do themselves. And they have the right to say whatever they want to say, thank God, in a country that values free speech. If a candidate has endorsed an ad, he/she is required to say so publicly, within the ad. If that public statement is not there, I think we have to "give credit" to the person or organization who paid for the ad and leave it alone.
Get over it. These things happen. Running for office is a contact sport. The candidates all know that. Now the sport includes a bunch of blind referees, the press, who call foul because they can.

The Bickersons
[Read the article: She said, he said]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After last night, I think it's safe to say we don't want the Bickerson's in office. Edwards came off looking presidential; Hillary came off looking mean-spirited and shrill; Obama came off looking peeved and on the defensive.
I don't care about nitpicking each candidate's past votes and every little word they've ever said. I don't care who is the biggest liar in a field of liars. I want someone in office who spends all his/her time thinking about me and my country and the millions of people in the world who are looking to us to get our act together and reassume our global dignity.
I'm sick of the Clinton's and all the old-style politics. I'm sad that Barack Obama has been dragged into it. If I could vote in SC, I'd vote for Edwards in a heartbeat.
